Rank Our Players 1-14 This Season Thus Far

Post#1 » by Scalabrine » Mon Feb 1, 2016 10:26 pm

How would you rank our roster 1-13 so far this season?

Take into account overall impact, defense and offense, games missed, statistics and anything else you find important to the success of our team.

1. Carmelo Anthony - All around game and our best scorer. We really struggle when he's not playing.
2. Kristaps Porzingis - Great defender and stretches the floor.
3. Arron Afflalo - Has made some clutch plays and his only weakness is that he doesn't consistently bring it.
4. Robin Lopez - Great defender, boxes guys out, and does all the dirty work.
5. Lance Thomas - Our most versatile defender, smart and does the little things.
6. Langston Galloway - Great defender, doesn't turn the ball over and makes the right plays and hits open shots
7. Derrick Williams - Has won us a few games with his ability to just be explosive and has really improved his all around game.
8. Jose Calderon - Hits open shots and doesn't turn the ball over. He runs the offense well and tries hard on d but he gets blown by way too often.
9. Kyle O'Quinn - All heart and hustle, he always makes an impact when he gets the minutes he's just in a weird spot with minutes and roster makeup.
10. Lou Amundson - I think he doesn't get enough credit. He always comes in ready to play and his defense and rebounding have come up big multiple times.
11. Sasha Vujacic - Has been really professional and helps the young guys. Knows the offense and even the he isn't the most talented he plays within himself for the most part.
12. Jerian Grant - Hasn't really put it together yet but he's shown flashes of being able to get to the basket, just needs to start hitting his jumper with a little bit more consistency.
13. Kevin Seraphin - Doesn't get a ton of PT but when he does he can get you instant buckets, really doesn't do much else and he turns the ball over a little too much for what his role is.
14. CleAnthony Early - Really hasn't played much at all.

It's rather hard to actually rank all of the players because they do individual roles that's somewhat unrelated to other players on the team.

1) Melo is our best player and until the team can win even one game without him...no one should be listed second.

3) Kri6 development is what will eventually place him in the 2 slot, but for now he is third. excellent place to be for the rook.

4)Lopez is fourth even though I'd prefer he be somewhere else. he does what his capabilities are, and handles the center position decently. I do think the majority of teams have a better option on their team at center, but on this team he's fourth here because the rest of the team is not starter quality.

After these three the ranking falls off a lot.

5) Lance would my next player up. he does a lot of little things out there and usually has a positive impact, but is rather limited as a role player, but I do think his defense is above average. Just a good player to have on the bench and most teams could use a player like him. Wouldn't start consistently for any team that desires to win though.

6) Galloway is the guard version of Lance although I don't think his defense isn't as good but he's serviceable in that area. he should start over Afflalo imo.

7) Calderon. Does what he can, but should be on the bench because what he can do isn't good enough in a starting capacity. Too much of a liability on defense although he does try, and actually a liability on offense because he isn't a real threat to score or break down any opponents defense.

8) Derrick Williams has some really good offensive talent, but cant really rely on him for heavy minutes thus the bench is where he is and should stay. I like him though, usually he provides decent scoring punch in limited consistent minutes.

9)Afflalo is way too streaky to be a starting caliber player. He's not as good as the players of same position we traded before him, but he does bring a more professional demeanor to the game. His defense isn't as good as Shumpert's and his offense isn't as good as JR's. Afflao's defense might be worse than Calderon's because it seems his man always light him up, where Calderon's man can just easily get by him, but they aren't directly scoring on him.

The rest imo aren't worth mentioning at this point, but the one that has been rather surprisingly awful is Grant. I did feel before the season that it would take most of the year to claim the starting position and there was a point where I felt the D-league could help. It still might, but I'm not really sure. He honestly doesn't look like an NBA player out there. That's really an issue with players who come into the league at his age. Their development might not be much more than what is seen, but that's not bad if they are really good, but if they have glaring weaknesses and flaws it makes it that much harder for them to be able to grown and contribute.

Out of our last three 3+ year college players drafted (Shumpert, Hardaway), Grant is easily the worst on a team that probably could use him the most, but there is one common factor in all three.....none actually improved from year to year in college.

So, there are flags on these types of players already, but on the NBA level at least the previous two were recognized with honors as being some of the better rookie drafted (Tim and Iman made 1st team NBA rookie). There is a starting and backup pg position ripe for the taking....Grant cant claim either as his own as he does nothing well or even serviceable. But for a team that isn't set on winning meaningful things in the near future, nothing wrong with having him around to see if he can actually contribute and hopefully grown into a serviceable role.

I really can't argue with that order much

Id move a guy like Williams in front of Galloway perhaps but then again his biggest games are usually losses
Id move a guy like Rolo in front of AA but then again not really

pretty good list

I might move Grant up that list just for the 1 game he won us vs ... was it the celtics? 76ers?

Did I really see someone put KS over KOQ? Even If you think KOQ is bad, KS is about half of that.

dakomish23 wrote:Did I really see someone put KS over KOQ? Even If you think KOQ is bad, KS is about half of that.

he played really good against OKC. he lokked better on both offense and defense recently but KOQ played better generally.

Kp didnt play well at last month. he hit that rookie wall. he played too many games. he already played more games than his European seasons. I can understand that. Also he had really good games. His defensive presence is there but his energy level is lower than first months. Anyway i assume he'll bounce back.

1-melo (he desperately needs 2nd star here)
2-kp (great year for our future-franchise player)
3-rolo (he's good on both offense/defense. he has some post game its nice. he really defends opposing guards well. he played better than his contract.)
4-afflalo(inconsistent. he won some games by his own so i put him here. his defense dissappointing.)
5-lance thomas (i was one of the LT haters but look at his shooting numbers. he shoots like 3pt specialist. fg/3pt/ft all good. his defense is good too)
6-d-will(i would put him in top3 if he played like this all season. he played well recently.)
7-galloway(backup guard. dont expect more than that.
************ rest of them doesnt mean much ********
8-calderon(i would be ok to watch 17-18mpg calderon coming from bench and running p&r offense. otherwise he's not a good passer. he cant drive. he should score more. his defense is really problem. he lets too many points. he's net negative on floor.)
9-grant(played some good games otherwise he sucked mostly. his shooting is questionable and triangle doesnt working. he needs to with confidence.)
10-koq/seraphin (they had some good mostly bad nights. they can protect the rim like rolo/kp. their offense inconsistent and subpar. they had some awful nights. i expected more energy from them and getting 20-30 minutes in some games. d-will got these games.
Speights and other rotation big men can get 20-30 minutes in some nights but KS/KOQ were on court for resting KP/RoLo)
12-Amundson (not disappointed but he has limits.)
13-c.early(he played really nice game at summer league/preseason. fisher didnt give any minutes for him before that shooting incident.)
14-vujacic (i know him from Europe. He was disaster for his Turkish teams. He consistlently got worser and he signed with avoid-relagation goaled Turkish team last year. Last 3 years was really awful for him. He still plays like that. Shooter who cant shoot. He cant defend too.)
15-thanasis (look at his dleague stats. he cant shoot. not even free throws. poor man's q.acy? he is much shorter/less athletic version of Deandre Jordan so basically he's useless. he doesnt have any playing experience. he cant defend pg-sg since he's not smart defender. he cant defend pf-c since he's too short. USELESS)
