Poll: Would Phil? Westbrook for Rose and...

Phil takes Westbrook, no picks and a pissed Noah or 1yr Rose, motivated Noah and keeping picks?

Yes, he'd give up the picks, upset Noah by trading Rose and pray disaster doesn't strike.

No, he'd ride it out with Rose, keep Noah happy and have picks if disaster strikes.

Poll: Would Phil? Westbrook for Rose and...

Post#1 » by BBALLER4FR » Thu Jul 14, 2016 4:38 pm

This is a hypothetical for serious consideration.

If OKC calls and says Westbrook will only come east to play in NY, and the going rate was Rose and 2 future 1sts, I know there are many that wouldn't hesitate but THE QUESTION IS ...

Given that we picked up Noah primarily because he was recruited by Rose, does Phil give up the 1st rounders, risk missing the playoffs should Noah/Melo get injured and alienate both Rose and Noah for the far superior option?
Those last 70 seconds, Randle in a nut shell.

Awful 2 for 1 3PT attempt when we are up 2
Doesn’t close out on Sabonis --> open 3
Takes another side step off balance 3

We got sucked into the Randle vortex where all good feelings go to die.

I'd have my back channel tell Westbrook to simply just sign with us next year...everyone else is doing it (I.e. leaving their teams, not needing the extra money and year that comes with resigning under Bird Rights) and that doing so will make the Knicks stronger (i.e. meaning it'll improve his chances to win)...then tell OKC thanks but no thanks.

Making this trade would be betting our future on Russ's health. What if he blows out his knee? Then we're screwed for years, once again. If Rose can't play, we're ok next year and have BJ this year.

Yep you have to be doing as much shady chit possible to convey to Westbrook that his best chance possible to win a title is to suck it up this year with the Thunder and come over next summer. If he wants to be impatient and short-sighted and go to the Celtics or the Lakers and deplete their talent base then go ahead but, you won't win anything notable soon at either of those places.

Maybe with the understanding from Phil and Rose that Derrick would ball out this contract year and be re-signed. Maybe behind the scenes faith and agreement took place. Rose had to have spoken with Noah prior. Why would he recruit a guy to come to a team he was uncertain about being in his future?

Why would Phil do that for Rose if he plays well in a contract year when he hasn't played well the last 3 years and is still a huge risk health wise when dudes like Russ and CP3 will be on the market next summer?

He should hang up on them, and just sign the guy outright as a free agent or move on. Keep our picks.

you have to risk the trade to boston and him being happy

you stick to the plan, play out the season and see

Westbrook can come here as a FA as can Paul
you stay the course and don't panic

at the trade deadline you can reassess but really this 1 year plan needs a year

Don't see it happening for few reasons:

1) Westbrook's probably gonna get shipped to a team before the season starts, which will take us out of the equation since we're not gonna give up Rose that quickly into this.

2) Trading him at the deadline doesn't really make much sense from a team perspective. If we're winning with Rose, we're probably not giving him up. If we lose with Rose, then I don't really see a trade making sense.

3) Any trade will involve KP. But the Knicks have invested too much into him already. Many of the signings are really catering to KP directly and indirectly. Willy, Vujacic, LT, Mindgames, Noah to an extent.... a lot of these signings are for KP. Doesn't really make much sense to get rid of KP with all his pieces still on the team.

Most importantly:

4) Westbrook WANTS to play with KP and Phil knows that

5) He'll be available as a free agent. No need to rush

OKC would say no to a lot of offers. I will say this, there aren't many teams that can appeal to Westbrook re-signing, that own high picks (would have to be another teams pick if team is good enough for Westbrook to consider re-signing) and have enough salary going back. I know the Celtics can fulfill that list but beyond that the Thunder's potential haul becomes scraps. I think the Knicks can fulfill 2 of those 3 on that list since

1. Westbrook would likely re-sign in NY with Melo, KP, Noah and Lee as his soldiers

2. Rose is not only a former #1, league MVP and still a top PG in the league, but he's expiring so the risk is minimal and the reward is you've got someone who can be Westbrook light if he's free from injury.

The picks are where it gets tricky in which case if they suck they'd have their pick (high) and the Knicks pick for multiple years (mid to low).

Where it gets tricky with the Celtics is though they have the picks and the talent to send back to OKC one has to wonder if IT/Horford sells Westbrook on resigning there. They are talented but is a Westbrook/IT/Horford trio better than, or even on par with a Westbrook/Durant/Ibaka/Adams quartet? I'd argue a Westbrook/Lee/Melo/KP/Noah 5 would bring it closer.

Edit: I'm assuming one of IT/Crowder would be outgoing with a pick for OKC to consider.

Westbrook isn't coming here. He's an LA guy and Boston has way more assets to trade. Plus Rose is going to bloom at the Garden.
