OT: Shaq could be done.

Post#1 » by Hardaway 10 » Mon Jan 7, 2008 3:50 am

From the Heat beat guy, Ira Winderman's blog today after the game....

#
Not only is Shaquille O'Neal's hip injury legit, it might be more serious than initially thought.
#
Or it just might be part of getting old.

Shaq retiring would speed up the Heat rebuilding quite a bit. :nonono:

If the Heat get the number draft pick they might be in a better shape than people think. Derrick Rose and Wade in the backcourt would be crazy.

If Shaq is forced to retire, that'd improve the Heat's cap situation more than any trade could. Riley would be all over tanking this year if he got another franchise player in the draft and enough cap space to sign an all-star big( Elton Brand, anyone?) this off-season.

If he retires, doesn't the contract still count against the cap? I thought when Allan Houston retired his $$ still counted till his contract was over.

The CBA is a little confusing but the Heat could get a huge break if Shaq is medically unfit and is forced to retire due to injury. The contract might count but the Heat could be granted an injury exception for 50% of Shaq's money this offseason, which is ~$10 million, to sign a free agent.

If he retires this year in-season, his money counts this year, but as of next year (1 calender year from whenever he retires) it would be removed for the last 2 years.

The question is, is it really an injury or general affects of a body that's breaking down.

Probably general affects of the body breaking down. A 7 footer who is 300 pounds playing basketball? Bound to cause problems to him as he gets older.

This exception can only be used to acquire one player. The maximum salary for the replacement player is 50% of the injured player's salary, or the average salary, whichever is less

They won't get 10 Mil. Around 5.

Doesn't Shaq get $20 mil per on his extension for another 2 years after this one?

Or is it average salary of the team, with the cap being around $55 mil?

Average salary of the league.

10 Mil > 5.3 Mil (which I do believe is the average league salary)

So the Heat would get 5.3.
