Should we have kept our intentions for 2010/11 more private?

Post#1 » by HarpStarkOakEw » Thu Jul 3, 2008 6:07 pm

I'm reading the Nenad Kristic wiretap article and in it there is a statement that the nets dont want to give him more than a 2yr deal. WTF.

New Jersey has added some key players to their front court, with Krstic looking like the odd man out. The Nets also don't want to give Krstic, a restricted free agent, more than a two-year deal.

I know it's no secret that the free agent class in 2010/11 will be ridiculous but c'mon they are shedding salary much more easily than us and are currently in a far better situation. They are just as obvious as us now, with that- i'm sure more teams are going to jump in this "race".

I'm sure our plans were never a secret...every team has been aware about 2010...especially in the east where both NY and NJ are suffering teams..they know they can cash in..esp w/ the Nets having their new stadium built..very attractive to associate your success w/ a stadium(like saying MJ owned the Garden) and whoever signs w/ the Nets when they move in has that chance

Was it ever a secret that NY was going to try to get LeBron/Wade/Bosh?

The whole LB having a knick $$ clause if he came to NY (bogus or not) made it a certainty that every team in the league would be expecting NY to make a run at him

I think so. Always keep things close to the vest. I'm sure Dolan cringes every time Walsh says it publicly. I think it also backs Donnie into a corner if and when a fire sale materializes.

everyone in the league is savy enough to know when major players become free agents.

what we need to be smarter about is letting the fanbase think this is a realistic possibility

1) How ironic...I cring whenever I hear the name Dolan publicly.

2) Do you really think Jim is smart enough to formulate a facial expression like "cringe," when it comes to something so psychologically advanced as keeping things private?

No. It doesn't matter, talking publicly about the 2010 didn't harm us.

Donnie Walsh had to make it clear the times of trading picks, overpaying for marginal talent and chasing an elusive playoff spot was over. He had to send a strong signal to the fans and the whole league.
If Isiah was still in charge you'd have seen Baron Davis, Elton Brand or Gilbert Arenas agents claim their clients were dying to play in NY and it was their dream, blah blah...

Now no FA will use the Knicks to raise his value and get a better contract elsewhere. No team will offer us awful trades where they would dump their garbage on us.

Donnie had to make our strategy clear, if he didn't a player like Duhon would seek a 5yr full MLE contract for example.

Donnie had to make it clear we're eyeing cap space and will no longer overpay.
He had to send a signal it was a new regime, he had to make his presence felt.
Right now, no team is looking at us like a place where to dump their garbage.
In only two months, Donnie made the Knicks respectable again. We're no longer the laughing stock of the league, no longer a management you can fleece easily.

But he can just do that privately. He has a good reputation anyway. Displaying your cards is not always good. I'd like teams to still come to us with whatever deal they have in mind, good or bad. I trust Donnie's decision-making in trades.

Actually Dolan still doesn't know about the 2010 plan.
