In spite of his abilities, Artest has been the subject of much controversy. During his rookie season with the Chicago Bulls, he was subject to criticism for applying for a job at Circuit City, just to get an employee discount.[

After recording a career-high seven steals in March, Artest tells reporters that steals came pretty easy for him, then matter-of-factly details shoplifting back in the projects of Queensbridge, N.Y: "I used to steal cookies from the store as a kid. I got real good. I used to steal about four packages a day. It prepared me for the league."
