I'm not an expert in this stuff, but Manute Bol killed a lion with a spear. I don't know if a Machete cuts it, but I've read about african tribesmen killing elephants with spears. A hand held weapon can be a pretty devastating thing, but not for an average person, it has to be a skilled person.

another factor is that hunters seek out the weak and sick, not the strongest animal, so that takes away from the man with spear wins argument, cause they might not against a full grown, athletic, young adult.

The grey wolf shouldn't even be on the list. They weigh in at about 100 lbs. Compared to 500 for the lion. It's just no contest. The Wolverine is a great figher, but now you're talking 30-35 lbs for a male. Tough, but small. Kinda like Nate Robinson. I'd put my money on Shaq (the brown bear) over Nate (the wolverine), even if Nate is tough for his size.

Its between the Lion, the Grizzly or the Polar bear. (some people say that the Grizzly and Polar bear are actually the same species) - just addapted to different landscapes. The Kodiak bear might be the winner

Black mamba FTW -- or rather for the fatality.

Check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_mamba

Also known as 'the shadow of death', the black mamba can grow up to 14' long.
A single bite injects enough venom to kill between 20-40 grown men.
It is said to be the fastest moving snake in the world, and is known to be extremely aggressive.
