OT:What's next for Dwight Howard? (2 YEARS Later)
4/29/13
Barkley talking about Dwight's ceiling reminded me of this thread.
So naturally I had to bump it. I hope I'm not breaking any rules by doing this. I figure we can use this thread to discuss how much he has really improved and where you see him on the scale now.
........................................................................................
We've talked about players like Clark, Anderson, and Gil needing to improve during the off-season.
What about Dwight? What else does he need to improve on during this off-season?
In no particular order:
1.Free throws
2. Polishing up his post-up game
3. Passing
4. Limiting stupid TO
5. Keep working on that elbow jumper and expanding on that shot.
So What else?
This thread isn't about Dwight Howard being traded or leaving after 2012. So please leave that stuff out. For once, can we have a thread talking about Dwight in a Magic Uniform.

Signing an extension and working on T/O's
People like to say "Hey, you don't want to swim with sharks"
But I'm faster than sharks, so it's okay.

For me, passing should be the key area of focus.
Last season, he did a great job of catching the ball and then watching the defense. This year, it seemed that as soon as he got the ball he was going to make his move. If he couldn't, he would pass out and try to re-post.

Ball control and passing. If he can improve those things his turnovers will come way down.

1. Free throws.
2. Passing out of the double team and creating for others.

Re: What's next for Dwight Howard? (not about free agency)
Common sequence:
1. He gets the ball down low with the pass around/above his chest.
2. Instead of going straight up and laying it in, he almost always brings the ball back down or takes a dribble and then goes up. The same goes with when he gets an offensive rebound.
3. This leads to him getting fouled a lot, b/c it's easier for a defender to hack him around the arms and wrap him up when he tries to reposition when he doesn't need to.
I see big men like Pau Gasol catch and hook around the basket. I don't know why dwight doesn't do more of that.
I know it is a specific kind of example, but I believe it is a common problem that can be fixed.

Come to think about it, you rarely see Dwight drive and dish on the move.

#4 should be #1. He has way too many turnovers.

Passing, once he got that down, that will lower the TO.

Re: What's next for Dwight Howard? (not about free agency)
I agree that he does need to work on all those. However I think the thing he needs to work on the most is his mental toughness.
He gets agitated and frustrated too easily and picks up silly personal fouls and technical fouls. He needs to understand how the game is being called and react to that. He needs to not let players get into his head a frustrate him.

He needs to cut down on swinging his arms around flagrantly as revenge, which pretty much always ends up as a silly foul.

Otis Smith trade for Varajeo..
Have Dwight work with Anderson.. Anderson flop every play, every time its an offensive foul, and have Dwight control his emotions or he gets shocked with a wire..
jk
In all seriousness though.
1. Passing out of doubles
2. Expanding post game
3.Try to workout with Gil, Clark and Ortan.
4. Have fun, but continue to work hard..

Re: What's next for Dwight Howard? (not about free agency)
all the listed things, but also this:
not swatting blocks into the stands - rather tipping them to teammates so we can have that extra possession.
i know it's difficult and he won't be able to do it all the time, but just once or twice a game could mean a few more easy baskets and thus a few more wins

@chunnyboy - I agree with the blocking thing. At the same time, i don't know if that is something he can really change. Maybe i should go play basketball against people that are shorter than me and see if i can control how i block the ball.
@Jamaican kid- I know you were joking about the flopping thing, but I kind of want dwight start semi-flopping. If someone is horse collaring him, i want him to somewhat exaggerate the foul by falling backwards. He needs to make it tough on the refs..

I agree with this. The reason the refs aren't calling flagrant fouls for dwight is because he doesn't have the "I've been hit by a ton of bricks" reactions like all the players dwight touches.
