Jerry sloan has withdrawn his name from consideration for the head coaching position of the Charlotte Bobcats.

The franchise is expected to choose between Quin Snyder and Brian Shaw.

"I took myself out today," Sloan said by phone. "I don't want to comment on it because it's never profitable for anybody. It just makes it sound like you're making a statement about someone. But they were wonderful and there were no problems. I just took myself out."

Sloan insisted he wasn't disappointed.

"No, not at all," he said. "Whatever happens, happens. I don't have any control over those things. I just do what we've got to do. If somebody calls me, I guess I'd listen to what they have to say. But I don't have an agent, and if somebody calls I'd be willing to listen to them."

Sounds like he's holding out for the Magic gig. Discuss.

Sloan's just not a good fit for the magic. Even if he is one of the GOAT coaches.

If Dwight stays: him and Sloan will not get along.

If Dwight leaves: Sloan may not be around for the full rebuilding process, his window of time is limited.

Doubt Magic will purse Sloan unless their top two options are suddenly unavailable. Sloan probably just realized he's too old to be coaching a bunch of inexperienced scrubs.

He probably pulled out because he was not going to get the job.

My gut is saying Quin Snyder will get The Bobcats job as Brian Shaw will wat to wait for a better opportunity.

Jerry Sloan is not someone who I would want as coach here in Orlando. He could work out somewhere else though.

Sloan is one of the greatest coaches of all time. Appeasing a pre-madonna shouldn't be a reason to not bring a legend, like Sloan, in. The only coach that would be nice enough to make Dwight happy, would be if Stuff got the job.

What's wrong with that, exactly?

Seems pretty self-explanatory to me but I guess I'll put it in black and white for you.

Why have a veteran coach with a few years left spearhead the rebuilding process? Why not hire a young guy like Shaw who will grow and get experience with the team versus hiring an old man who will leave the team three years down the road.

I see your point, but at the same time, a veteran coach can actually teach a young team a thing or two that will help them develop quicker... if we're rebuilding, we're going to suck so I wouldn't be opposed to getting a mentor.

I have no idea why you guys think Sloan and Dwight would not get along.

O'Quinn will have a longer and more successful NBA career than Nicholson. Any takers?

Having a future hall of fame coach means nothing if our future hall of fame player doesn't want to play for him. All that said, I doubt Dwight would be opposed.

Because, like Stan Van Gundy, Sloan is notorious for being a no-nonsense task master. He's not the type to be best buddies with his players and pat them on the head every time they make a basic play, which seems to be what Dwight wants from his coach.
I found that if you have a goal, that you might not reach it. But if you don't have one, then you are never disappointed. And I gotta tell ya... it feels phenomenal.

Also, bad/mediocre teams seem to shuffle through players/coaches every 3 or so years anyway. Who's to say we'd keep Brian Shaw or some other unexperienced coach around through the rebuilding process for years and years? Seems more likely he'd get: 1 year of Dwight drama (mediocre), 1 year of post-Dwight chaos (terrible), 1 or 2 year rebuild with new draft pick(s) (still pretty terrible), and then get canned for "underperforming".

If you get Sloan instead, he gets to coach up the next group for a year or so and retire on his own terms. Maybe the Magic organization stays in his good graces and he sticks around for another position in the front office where he can mentor the players, or advise coaches or management.
