So Rudy Gay is available... We interested? Trade scenarios?

Post#1 » by mrtcsm » Sat Jan 5, 2013 2:48 am

Hey guys... hope you all doing good!!! Long time no post.

Just read the Grizz are exploring trades for Rudy Gay. I have always liked the guy and would love to have him with our young group of guys. Now, how much would it cost.

Here my trade proposal: like, maybe, hate it? Any other ones?

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=afmm2gs

Memphis:
OUT- Rudy Gay
IN- Arron Afflalo / Derrick Williams

Minnesota:
OUT- Derrick Williams / Brandon Roy / JJ Barea
IN- JJ Redick / Hedo Turkoglu

Orlando:
OUT- Arron Afflalo / JJ Redick / Hedo Turkoglu
IN- Rudy Gay / Brandon Roy / JJ Barea

Memphis moves Gay's big contract and get two serviceable young players in Arron and Derrick.

Minnesota moves JJ Barea to alleviate the log jam at PG and SF as Budinger should be back any time. In return they get a proven guard in Redick and young leader who will fit very well with the group they have. They will absorb the contract of Hedo only to have his big expiring next year to play with. Besides, I think Turk could do some damage running the high pick and roll with Love, Pek down low, Reddick and Ridnour spotting in the corners for the threes. That would be fun to watch.

Orlando gets a young star to fill their weakest position at SF, while unloading Hedo's big contract. They immediately get very slim at SG letting go Afflalo and Redick, but get two proven guards in return on Roy and Barea. Not sure at what capacity Brandon is going to come back from his knee injury but that is a risk they would have to take. JJ Barea is a young veteran with a championship ring that could bring a lot of energy off the bench or even start if the Magic decide to flip Nelson and a big to solidify our SG position. Not to mention Barea's puertorican heritage would bring a much needed boost to games attendance by the PR community which is big in Orlando.

GO MAGIC!

Although I love Gay, JJ's and Gay's PER are the same? I see no reason to trade JJ away just to fill our SF spot. Not to mention Aflack also...

I'm going to have to pass on Rudy (6'8, SF). I like him, he's a good player and he puts up all-star numbers, but he's not a cornerstone player; and honestly Afflalo (6'5, SG) puts up similar numbers/production and he is only a year older than Rudy (and on a better contract). I don't see him fitting with this team and the direction we are heading with the youth/rebuild process. So no thanks.

Btw I might as well say this here now (before someone else makes a thread about it)... I don't want Danny Granger on this team either. I've been hearing about the Pacers possibly moving him since he's 29 gong on 30, and Paul George is breaking out.

Dont be so sure! They have already stated they are very interested in JJ, and they know it will take more than Williams to get him. Brandon Roy is a negative piece given his contract, so id say they get a fair deal here.

Given that we are moving afflalo (vet) for gay (vet) i would say its a good move. We dont get older, and come away with the best player in the trade, and while he may not be a long term part of our plans, he is a lot more likely to bring us elite talent in a trade down the road.

Id do this in a heartbeat. Very well thought out trade, kudos to the op!

I don't mind this team absorbing salary, especially one like Rudy's as FA is never a guarantee.

Though, i'm very hard pressed when it comes to who we involve in such a deal.

I don't want Nicholson or Harkless involved because there's no point of mortgaging our youth if we're not ready to compete, be actual threats in the Eastern Conference. Though if this is a precursor to other moves that'll put us in contention quicker then i'm all for it.

Not Rudy related, I'd actually like Milsap to be our target with Big Baby being the center piece to any deal.
So, in a best case scenario would you folks be on board if we were to somehow acquire Milsap and Gay at the expense of our TPE, Harkless, McRob, Redick, Big Baby, a draft pick or two (not this year's of course)?

PG - Nelson
SG - Affalo
SF - Gay
PF - Milsap
C - Vucevic

Bench: (Who we'd keep past this year)

Nicholson
Moore
Ayon (maybe, if not included in any deal)

Also, I know everyone's for stockpiling draft picks and acquiring youth, but to be successful in this league you need a blend of everything. Veterans, youth, promising players, etc. Eventually you don't want to have too much youth as the majority of time teams can't keep all of it (Ex: Harden and the Thunder) past their rookie deals based on what kind of market they'll be entering, their agent, their demand, and teams (smaller markets) outbidding themselves based on their potential. So, in knowing that, let's just avoid that.

We haven't had a player that could create his own shot in a lonnnnnnnnnnng time. I'd gladly trade anyone not named Nicholson or Vucevic

Gay may not be worth the contract, but there aren't many other options out there via free agency or this year's draft. Who do people plan on pursuing if not him?

I'd take Rudy Gay. Depending on what the cost is, of course. If the Grizz are willing to take Redick + fillers, it would be a great deal for us. Redick may be gone at the end of his contract if any other team outbids the Magic and Memphis needs a 3-point shooter. Also, if they take Hedo, they can clear up partly Gay's long contract. It's a deal that works for both.

Why? what good does that do us? We are not going to be contenders until we have a star, Rudy Gay is not a star. The Lotto is the only way back towards legitimacy, getting an all star caliber player now would be completely pointless.

I wouldn't give anymore than JJ + Hedo or Harrington. Gay isn't worth his contract. And I think him being here would hurt our chances of moving up in the draft to land a real horse.

I'd prefer to go after players that live up to their contract or are a bargain.

Orlando has two project SFs in Harkless and Jones. One of those two should emerge as an acceptable Magic starter. What Orlando needs is a new PG.
