Around the League 2014-2015 Regular Season Edition

Post#1343 » by tooler » Tue Feb 3, 2015 9:21 pm

Rare mainstream criticism of Giannis from Zach Lowe today.

8. The Greek Freak’s Shooting

We knew it would take Giannis Antetokounmpo a while to master pretty much any NBA skill, but he shot a respectable 34.7 percent from deep last season on 118 attempts. Competence from long range didn’t seem too far off.

But the Greek Freak has backslid, badly, in Year 2. He’s 5-of-27 from long range, and his paranoia about even shooting the ball is infecting Milwaukee’s offense. Defenders know they can stray off him, and when the Bucks kick the ball Antetokounmpo’s way, he tends to hold it or dribble aimlessly as the defense resets itself. That’s not always bad, since Antetokounmpo is a solid one-on-one driver, but he can stall out the Bucks offense.

It probably doesn’t matter. It’s still so early in Antetokounmpo’s career, and he’s made progress across so many areas of his game already. But he has to craft a jumper almost from scratch.

I check his box scores (among other interesting rookie-sophomores throughout the league) and I was curious why he seemed to have so little impact in some games. He's attempting more field goals overall this year but maybe the reluctance to shoot has hurt him this season. I noticed Bucks fans were counting his jump shot makes during our godawful game against them.

Anyway, I hope he figures it out, seems like a good kid. I'm just tickled by media narratives and the hype machine. It'll be interesting to see when/if they begin to criticize him more if he doesn't improve this aspect.

Also a cautionary tale about Aaron Gordon or any other young player. Shooting and confidence are weird.

Bonus in that article: harsh criticism of the Clippers' flaws, and they have a rim protector and two superstars. It makes you wonder why we even bother. :)

man, the Thunder have some weird priorities on how they spend their money. good thing they had Perkins on that massive contract, and now they're paying Collison $4M a season. would hate to think they preserved money for James Harden or the next iteration of him...

And now... will KOQ get a similar contract to Collison's?

Shouldn't he be running for the cherry pick?

The Lakers are tanking so hard right now... all their best healthy players are coming off the bench.

JV now total record comes to 100 games under 500 which makes him second worse coach in NBA history.

This reminds me of advanced statistics that track minutes * production above replacement level. You can have a bad player but if he doesn't play a lot of minutes, he doesn't hurt you that much. Willie Green and Channing Frye are awful this year but we compound that by playing them a ton.

Jacque is the same way. So bad, yet a surprising amount of longevity. Perhaps that's why he plays Willie Green so much!

Gortat after the win against Brooklyn:

“At the end of the day, it’s Brooklyn. We can’t get too excited.”

Miss that guy.
