Re: Fun with numbers
First up: fun with small sample sizes.
Dewayne Dedmon has a 15.90 PER.
That's higher than the following young darling centers:
Mason Plumlee
Kelly Olynyk
Cody Zeller
Stephen Adams
He has a higher TS% and rebounding rate than the following centers:
Nikola Pekovic
Roy Hibbert
Joakim Noah
Andrew Bogut
Jordan Hill
Al Jefferson
He's also 20th in ESPN's DRPM.
Hey Dewayne, can you scale that up to 15 MPG so we don't have to overpay Kyle O'Quinn?

Interesting, Ben Gordon has been really good for us. Aaron Gordon too.
Willie Green should go... start serving beer at the concession stand.

Orlando is dead last in assists per game. The team needs a serious overhaul.

Re: Fun with numbers
Rondo comparisons hitting a little too close to home:
This was supposed to be a fun thread. On the bright side, Payton's shooting numbers can only go up, especially when he's not used as a spot-up shooter in the corner.

As Rondo's did?
And where is our starting "PG" on that list? Is it possible that someone thinks he's actually playing out of position now? JV would never thought this...

Serious overhaul no. Adjusments? Yes. Such as playing Elf exclusively at pg not spotting up and Dipo playing off the ball. A proper coach would also do wonders implementing some type of tangible organization and preparation.

Re: Fun with numbers
Kevin Pelton on Elfrid Payton:
Defense - East PGs
Player Team Defensive RPM 13-14 14-15
John Wall WAS -0.4 2.2
Elfrid Payton ORL N/A 1.8
Michael Carter-Williams PHI -2.1 1.1
C.J. Watson IND -0.9 1.04
Jeff Teague ATL -0.8 0.5
Kyle Lowry TOR 0.4 0.3
Mario Chalmers MIA 0.8 0.0
The chart at right summarizes defensive real plus-minus (RPM) leaders from this season among East point guards. Including 2013-14 ratings highlights how noisy these figures can be over a small sample. It's reasonable to conclude that Mario Chalmers, Lowry, Teague and Wall are all near the top of this group based on their consistent success.
According to NBA.com/Stats, the Wizards are allowing 12.9 fewer points per 100 possessions with Wall on the floor this season, the largest gap for any of their starters. Wall seems to have harnessed his athleticism defensively, and he's got the best steal rate of this group. (Chalmers and Payton are tied for second.) Lowry is a physical defender who compensates with strength for his small stature, Teague a good recovery defender and Chalmers a talented (albeit often frustrating) freelancer.
Ultimately, the best defender of the group might be Elfrid Payton, who has proved a quick study as a rookie. Thanks to his pressure defense, the Magic's defensive rating is 5.6 points lower with him at the point.
When he says "ultimately" I'm not sure if he means "as of right now" or "in the long run," given that Wall seems to rate better than him at the moment. The noise on those number is pretty bad. Look at the switch between last season and this season. Hopefully Elfrid can keep it up... and find more ways to score.

Payton is well on his way to being a game changing defender at the position which many teams have their strongest offensive weapon. If he can just improve his offense threat just a bit he'll be a starting calibre pg on a good post season team.

Re: Fun with numbers
Posted for posterity before Frye turns it around. (If?)
Basically, Frye (and Willie as a bonus) are worse than replacement players at their respective positions, but we've doubled down on that negative number by playing them a ton of minutes.
VA: Value Added - the estimated number of points a player adds to a team’s season total above what a 'replacement player' (for instance, the 12th man on the roster) would produce. Value Added = ([Minutes * (PER - PRL)] / 67). PRL (Position Replacement Level) = 11.5 for power forwards, 11.0 for point guards, 10.6 for centers, 10.5 for shooting guards and small forwards
