B-a-T DRAFT THREAD: WAS OTC until 7:41PM EST, GSW on Deck

Post#1 » by LBPTarHeel27 » Tue Apr 21, 2015 4:38 am

NO COMMENTING - ONLY DRAFT PICKS

Make sure to keep in mind the judging categories:

-Quality of Talent (x3)
Pretty simple here. We know how good the guys you will draft are/were...just compare the compiled talent to other teams.

-Team Chemistry (x2)
Obviously we can't tell 100% for sure how these guys would play together but you should be looking to create a style of play. Whether it is fast paced, defensive minded, outside shooting, etc...your team should have an identity based on the players on the roster. Your coach should also reflect our style of play.

-Longevity (x2)
How many years do your studs have left in them? How long will it take for your young guys to develop? The key is to win titles. How long of a span can your team contend?

-Intangibles (x2)
Players that have the little something that doesn't show up on stat sheets, incredible passion, high energy, determination to win/refusal to lose. Basically the line that gets drawn between a guy who just makes a few All-Star teams in his career with some nice numbers and a guy that does the same but has a distinct imprint on the title that his real life team won or could win.

-Offense
Self explanatory

-Defense
Self explanatory

-Marketing
Once we get close to the end, I will create a roster page so that you may post your roster. Once we finish, this will transform in to the marketing page where you go in to detail about why your team is the best. Feel free to use pictures and make it look unique.

The multipliers come in to play with categories that I view as slightly more important than others. In total, there is 120 points to be earned across the 6 categories. There will be no decimals in the judgement process, only whole numbers. Owners will not judge their own team.

COACHING STAFF

Thought Process...
Interesting spot to be in. Having this pick, I know that I will not land a top NBA stud. So which direction do I go? Development will clearly need to be a big factor. Do I take the greatest coach of all time? Do I take the coach who can lead stars to titles? Do I take the coach who can develop young talent in to a dynasty? How about all of the above?

Head Coach: Gregg Popovich
Image
Here is a look at the 2014-2015 GM's Survey...

Who is the best head coach in the NBA?
1. Gregg Popovich, San Antonio

Which head coach is the best manager/motivator of people?
1. Gregg Popovich, San Antonio

Which head coach makes the best in-game adjustments?
1. Gregg Popovich, San Antonio

Now who do you round out his staff with? While there are plenty of "names" out there, it is silly to go based off of what these guys did as players. You go for proven, quality coaching ability.

Assistant Coach 1: Jim Boylen, San Antonio Spurs assistant coach
Image
"Boylen sat alongside Rudy Tomjanovich for over a decade and was a lead assistant to Tom Izzo....a guy who truly loves to get on the floor and work with players and isn't afraid to get his hands dirty with game preparation."

“He’s been the best guy on almost every staff he’s ever been on,” an NBA general manager says last week prior to Ty Corbin’s departure from Utah. “And the fact that Pop hired him gives him the ultimate stamp of approval.”

"An owner looking for sex appeal won’t want to see a glossy image of Boylen on the cover of a season-ticket appeal packet. But there’s a strong consensus that Boylen is an extremely capable lifer."

Now, who do you take from the college ranks. Well..this one was easy. A guy that has experience coaching pros in the olympics. Quickly becoming considered the greatest NCAA coach of all time. Has had success in several decades and with an ever changing game. He can develop, teach, and mentor players. This was easier than the other two spots.

Assistant Coach 2: Mike Krzyzewski
Image
My user name is LBPTarHeel27. For me to make this pick, it means something. The guy is undoubtably the best in the business and he is more than capable of contributing on an NBA level.

Head Coach: Phil Jackson

The Zen master, 11 Championships as a coach, 2 as a player, need I say more?

Assistant Coach from NCAA: Tom Izzo

Image

Amazing Xs and Os coach, great mentor and motivator.

Assistant NBA Coach: Alvin Gentry

Image

Loads of coaching experience with multiple top notch organizations, has a calming demeanor which should jive well with Jackson.

My pick for the Celtics head coach should be an obvious one....

Image

Red Auerbach is the soul of the Celtics. He is hands down the greatest nba coach of all time. He was able to take a team scattered with stars and make them completely ditch their ego's and play as a team. He dominated a league with teams that had much more concentrated talent then the current nba, and won 9 championships as a coach. Not to mention he won 7 championships as an executive of the Celtics in 2 different eras. He is the greatest Celtic of all time

Image
My first assistant has to be John Calipari. In a seven game series it would be a killer in morale to see Red lighting up his victory cigar as your team is getting blown out by 30, only to see the infinitely infuriating face of "Coach Cal" sitting around with a smirk on his face next to him. But in all seriousness Cal consistantly preaches team ball and his teams play an exasperating defense that is hard to grasp until you are.... being blown out by 30 points.

Image
My last assistant coach is another Celtic great, the one and only white mamba himself, Brian Scalabrine. My rationale for this pick is not only because a bench consisting of these three coaches would be consistent internet gold, but because he fits in. With the two egos of Cal and Red, these Celtics need an unsung hero. Also he has been consistently praised as having exceptionally high knowledge of the game, and the Golden State team that he is currently assisting on has a frightening offensive attack, something that both Red might need some time adjusting to in the current NBA game.

Great communicator, teacher, and motivator who has achieved more with less talent AND only Head Coach to ever win both an NBA and NCAA Championship

Image
Asst Coach1: Billy Donovan
2x NCAA Champion | .709 Career Coaching Record
Head Coach in waiting who has excelled at the college level winning back to back championships with the Florida Gators

Head Coach: Pat Riley
Image

The head coach of 5 NBA championship teams. General of the famed Showtime Lakers. An intense, meticulous, detail-oriented, hard worker. Values mental toughness, not just physical toughness. His defensive innovations, including the 1-3-1 half court trap, were so effective, the league redefined rules regarding illegal defenses. Adapted his Showtime offense to the changing skill sets of his aging players.

Assistant Coach (NCAA): Rick Pitino
Image

The Head Coach of the Louisville Cardinals. Career 74% win percentage and 2 time NCAA champion. A tough, blue-collar, old-school defensive minded coach.

Assistant Coach (NBA): Ettore Messina
Image

A coach of 27 championship teams across several European leagues. A proven winner. Expected coaching successor of the winningest team in NBA history, the San Antonio Spurs.

The Portland Trailblazers are blazing to a new identity as a up-tempo, defensive minded, deep team.

Head Coach: Billy Cunningham

Image

Billy Cunningham played fiercely, coached intensely, and won frequently. And he made it to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame with a career that reads like a how-to book for legends. As a player and then a coach for the Philadelphia 76ers, he was part of two NBA championship teams.

Strengths: A proven winner. Hails from the Dean Smith coaching tree known for uptempo style, respectable defense, and great depth. He reached the 200, 300, and 400-win milestone faster than any coach in NBA history. He led Philadelphia to the playoffs in every year as coach, and advancing to the NBA Finals 3 times, in 1979-80, 1981-82 and 1982-83, facing the Los Angeles Lakers all 3 times. He beat them once.

"He whipsawed them, stomped his feet at them, goaded them, drove them and together they had a memorable eight-year run."

Lead Assistant: Ed Pinckney

Image

Strengths: Hard worker. Dedicated. Loved by players. Can teach big men to play bull-nosed basketball.

Word From Around the League:

I think Ed should easily be a head coach in this league,” the long-time NBA assistant coach went on to say. “I just think he’s a really solid human being. He’s fun, serious. He cares. He’s easy to be around on a staff. He contributes something—not only as a professional, but as a human being, he contributes. So Ed’s a real positive individual in that regard and I think he has a really intense desire to be successful, for his team to be successful, for individuals he’s coaching to be successful in that regard.”

After 12 professional seasons as a 6-foot-9 power forward best known for his defensive prowess, Pinckney is respected by the Bulls’ players for his own NBA playing experience, as well as his ability to connect with them. Each of the team’s assistant coaches—Andy Greer, Adrian Griffin and Mike Wilhelm are the others—are assigned to work with individual players throughout the season and while Pinckney isn’t only limited to working with the Bulls’ big men, it doesn’t take much prodding for some of the post players to rave about him.

Second Assistant: Shaka Smart- The Team’s Future Head Coach

Image

Smart's teams play an upbeat style of basketball known as "havoc." Smart described his "havoc" defensive philosophy during his introductory press conference as, "We are going to wreak havoc on our opponent's psyche and their plan of attack." On the court, the "havoc" defensive mindset is visible through the heavy use of the full court press and pressing after made baskets to disrupt opponents' timing of offensive sets. The Rams have consistently maintained one of the most efficient and disruptive defenses in the nation, ranking 1st nationally in both turnovers and steals forced per possession from 2011-2014. Offensively, Smart-coached teams play uptempo, push the ball after misses, and run a weave-heavy motion offense.

The Sacramento Kings are coming in with some old Houston Flare. This coaching staff is built on fire and desire to win. This staff will get the best from its players!

Image

Image

Image

Head Coach : Rudy Tomjanovich

Image

Assistant Coach : Sam Cassell : He won two NBA Championships in his first two seasons in the league as a member of the Rockets, and his third with the Boston Celtics in 2008.

Image

NCAA Coach 2nd assistant : Greg Marshall -- Head coach Wichita State -- Gregg Marshall has built Wichita State into a monster of the Midwest and, in the process, ascended as one of college basketball’s elite head coaches. The unifying principle here is simple: Marshall is a really, really good coach. In three years he's recruited and developed unheralded players, replenished personnel losses, forged tight-knit and hard-nosed rosters, embraced different sets of expectations, all of it.

The answer is that Marshall coached these Shockers beyond their individual talent levels to play to the best of their abilities. To never once let up. To “play angry.” It should not be a surprise because Marshall has maxed out his teams since he became a head coach some 16 years ago. In a college basketball landscape where things have become greatly more individualized over the last few decades, teams like this season’s Shockers and coaches like Gregg Marshall are rare, and for that reason, they should be celebrated.

HC: Chuck Daly
AST1: Adrian Griffin
AST 2: Bill Self

Image

They say a team takes on the personality of it's Head Coach. So with that in mind, how could I not select the father of the "Bad Boys" to kick off all this fun! Daly was a master of the basketball psychology and knew how to push all the right buttons. In 13 coaching seasons, Daly had 11 winning seasons with the 4th highest winning percentage among the Top 10 NBA coaches of all time. He won titles with the Pistons in 1989 and 1990, revelling in the team's "Bad Boys" image. With his firm stewardship he helped the 1992 Dream Team avoid any of the ego problems that plagued later versions.

Image

According to the "NBA.com 2014-15 GM Survey", conducted by league GM's one of the questions is:

Who is the best assistant coach in the NBA?
1. Alvin Gentry, Golden State
2. Adrian Griffin, Chicago
3. Tyronn Lue, Cleveland
4. Ettore Messina, San Antonio
5. Mike Woodson, L.A. Clippers

“My journey has taken me through every facet of the game,” Griffin said. “I have been on the outside looking in, working my way up, I have been overseas, I was a starter in the league, I was buried on the bench, I have been cut—everything imaginable in the league, I have been through it. It helps me relate to players. I can tell them how to handle different situations. The NBA is a grind, the 82 games, the travel, the pressure, the expectations, so I call on my experience and past knowledge to build a bond with the players.”

The result is a coaching prospect who was characterized by one league insider as “a player-friendly Tom Thibodeau.” Griffin who is earning a Doctorate in Leadership has a hard nosed and hard working reputation that precedes him, but I chose him because he will relate to the type of players that I plan to draft and his tutelage under Thibadeau fits in nicely with Daly's tough defensive style of basketball.

Kansas' defense is always great. Every year. The Jayhawks get players, they lose players, they get new players - they're big, then small, they're fast, then muscular - but the defense always dominates. In 11 of the Self's 12 seasons at Kansas, the Jayhawks have finished in the top eight in the country in field goal percentage defense. For you tempo-free fans, Kansas' adjusted defensive efficiency ranks fifth on kenpom.com and is a top-five mainstay the last few years.

Image

Self is not a controlling coach. He doesn't preside over every possession. He doesn't go crazy sketching offensive plays, doesn't push his players into some rigid system, doesn't call a lot of timeouts so he can play on the chalkboard. Instead, he and his staff CONVINCE the players to stay in the moment, to play their roles, and more than anything to play tough.

"You just can't be soft." It's a theme that, for Self, fits every occasion. When a player gives a great scorer one step, a single step, Self says that's a form of softness. When a team takes a rushed and bad shot when the crowd gets loud and the other team is on a run, that's a form of softness. When a team falls in love with its high ranking and stops working, when a team allows the outside criticism to cripple its confidence, when a team passes the ball around the perimeter and settles for a long shot rather than attack, yes, all of those are a form softness too.
http://www.nbcsports.com/joe-posnanski/ ... elf#page=2

Kansas' defense is always great. Every year. The Jayhawks get players, they lose players, they get new players - they're big, then small, they're fast, then muscular - but the defense always dominates. In nine of the Self's 12 seasons at Kansas, the Jayhawks have finished in the top ten in the country in field goal percentage defense.

For nine straight years, Kansas has held at least a share of the Big 12 regular-season championship. How impressive is this? No team has done that in a BCS conference since UCLA in the 1970s. Bob Knight never did it. Mike Krzyzewski never did it. Dean Smith. Roy Williams. Rick Pitino. Jim Calhoun. Nolan Richardson. None of them ever won nine conference championships in a row.

Head Coach: Doc Rivers

Maybe a few coaches out there with better resumes, and more distinguished historically, but we wanted a more modern coach that could better relate to our players of today. Say what you want about Doc, but he has a very respectable career winning %, both in the regular season and playoffs, and has coached a team to a championship.

Assistant #1: Nate McMillan

930 games of head coaching experience under his belt, with a career .514 winning %. Not many assistants have that kind of mix of experience and success. Served as an assistant for Coach K on the '06, '08 and '12 US National Team.

Bulls select

HC: Larry Bird
Ac 1: Patrick Ewing
Ac 2: Fred Hoiberg

Bird only coached 3 years but totally knows how to coach as he has a great winning percentage and has a great work ethic. U don't win 69% of your games by sheer luck. Sure their probably better resumes out there but Bird will command respect with his playing career accomplishments.

Patrick Ewing is a guy who for some unknown reason keeps getting passed over for head coaching jobs. He's a hard worker and communicates well with players.

fred Hoiberg is an ex nba player who's making Iowa State a relevant basketball school. I love how he essentially took a program over with no experience and has done a great job. I love how his offense is which is essentially all players can play the perimeter and low block shoot 3s and rebound. His team's play uptempo and just are fun to watch.

With the first selection in the 2nd round the Denver Nuggets select:

Karl-Anthony Towns

Image

Towns has terrific physical attributes for an NBA big man, standing 7-0 in shoes with a 7-3 ½ wingspan and a strong 250 pound frame. While not a fast-twitch, freakishly explosive athlete, he is extremely mobile and coordinated for a player his size, running the floor well and showing very nice agility.

Towns shows excellent versatility on both ends of the floor, spending time at both the power forward and center positions for Kentucky, which he'll likely continue to do in the NBA.

With the second selection in the 2nd round, the San Antonio Spurs select:

Justise Winslow

Image

Measured at 6-6 without shoes, with a 6-10 wingspan and a chiseled 229 pound frame, Winslow has strong physical tools for either NBA wing position. He's a good athlete on top of that, showing nice quickness, a strong first step, and both the ability and willingness to punish weaker opponents with his imposing physique and outstanding toughness.

With the 3rd Pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, the Boston Celtics select...

Image

D'angelo Russell

D'angelo is the definition of a Celtics guard. Smooth, skilled, crafty, cold-blooded; he has it all! Measuring in at 6'5 with at 6'8 wingspan, he possesses elite measurement for a point guard. His body combined with his handles, BBIQ, and his smooth as butter shot will make him a dangerous rookie in Auerbach's rotation.
