Evan Fournier interview for Basketusa

Post#1 » by defko » Thu Jul 23, 2015 2:17 pm

Hi guys,

I don't know if it deserves its own thread but feel free to merge it. Evan Fournier gave an interview for a French newspaper. The French basketball team has actually it's own training camp before the Eurobasket.

Here's the link for the full interview: http://www.basketusa.com/news/306926/interview-evan-fournier-mon-objectif-faire-la-meme-saison-mais-sur-la-duree/

English is not my native tongue but I'll try my best to translate the most important parts of the interview.

- Are you afraid of the arrival of Mario Henzoja?
[laughing]

- Seriously, did you get the chance to meet him ?
No

- And with Scott Skiles, your new coach?
Yeah, I met him for an hour. Everything went right.

- Have you had the opportunity to talk about your role for next season?
Yes, we talked about it. He told me that I'm part of the core right now. He didn't gave me details since we're weeks away from the training camp

- How do you anticipate next season with some new players on the team?
I think we'll try to play small ball with Tobias Harris playing on the 4th spot (ala Draymond Green). I don't really know the new coaching staff so I can't give you more details now.

- You had a coach from the Magic who came to visit you in France
Yes. They came here to train me for 10 days. They're flying back to USA at this very moment.

How did you adapt to Florida?
The weather in Florida is very hot. I like it here, it's cool. The weather during winter is nice and that's a good point because it's too hard during summertime. And I'm on the east coast now, so I'm closer to my family.

You're close to Nikola Vucevic. Can you tell me more about your meeting?
Yeah, we're buddies. He came to me the first day during a training session and told me [Ouech, gro] (some french slang, meaning 'sup bro). We did get along very quickly.

- Are you close to someone else on the team?
You know, I'm just an easy-going guy so I do get along with everybody here

You had a very good start last season with the Magic. Do you think that you we're playing your best basketball?
Absolutely. The coach made some choices then but I stayed efficient all season long. Personnaly, I think i made a very good season. The only dark cloud was my injury but I can't control those kind of things.

Do you think you can keep that level of play (13-14 ppg) next season?
Yes, of course. There is no reason that I don't. If I was able to do it for 30 games, I can do it for plenty more. Just give me the opportunity to do it. My main focus for next season is to keep that level of play for the entire season.

He also give some details about his holidays in Hawaii and he also said that he is currently training to become more athletic.

Here you are guys.

Thanks for the post. People tend to forget how good Fournier was prior to his injury.

I like Evan a lot and I consider him a member of the core too. Obviously the core is Dipo, Vuc, Elf, Tobes, AG, Mario and to me French Samurai is a core piece. He's good. Sure, no superstars but I think we have potential stars on the roster in AG, Dipo and Elf and maybe even Harris and Vuc. Will they all become stars? Hard to say. Also, a potential killer-star in Mario. Frye, Dedmon, Smith and Watson the complimentary depth. We even have promising third stringers in Nicholson (who should eat up Frye's minutes plz), Marble, Applin and Harvey. We are suddenly getting really deep. Just need experience and further development of our youth.

Hope we can keep Evan here for years to come.

Love Fournier... But I get the feeling he's not going to be here for too much longer... He's a starting caliber SG...

Fournier is a very talented player with an improving all-around game. I really hope the Magic are able to hold onto him. That type of player is hard to find and key to any contender.

Realistically though, he's going to be pretty hard to keep around if he's not playing a key role. He's eligible for an extension this fall, otherwise he hits restricted free agency next summer. If that happens, someone will pay him well, and while the Magic can match - how deep do they go for a reserve?

Oladipo and Harris will be under a microscope more than ever this year...especially Oladipo who will be in a contract year the following season.

Another gem that points to the vision I want to see with Tobe.

Fournier is perfect for us. He's our version of Marco Bellinelli (while with the Spurs). Can be a real key contributor every night off the bench.

I also like Evan a lot. I think he is a starting caliber SG in this league with a good shooting stroke, handles and pretty good athleticism. That being said, he is in a contract year and will probably fetch $8mil a year in free agency next year (we all saw what happened this free-agency... next year will be even higher). I doubt we resign a 7th/8th man for a minimum $8mil per year. Hopefully, he plays well in his minutes for us and we can trade him at the deadline (if need be) for another asset (1st rounder) or a player that will help in any areas we see lacking during the season so we don't risk losing him for nothing.

Man I'll re-sign him for $8mill in a heart-beat, I'm worried he might get more.

I think he's perfect guard off the bench.
