Strategy discussion: we're buying 3-point shooting

Post#1 » by tooler » Fri Jul 1, 2016 11:53 am

Meeks .444 [EDIT] Oh haha, he only played 3 games; .373 career 3PT%
Augustin .405
Fournier .400

Parsons at .414?

It seems like we're rolling with the guys we've got and surrounding them with shooters. I still don't understand who we give the ball to in the 4th quarter.

Thoughts?

If this is really the plan, it will be a pretty impressive switch over the course of a single summer. Elfrid and Aaron still can't shoot, but a year ago we were an awkward mish-mash of intriguing pieces that brick shots.

Was Draymond a great three point shooter his second year?

Well we got shooters now.

Assuming we match Fournier, these guys can shoot reliably (mid-range and/or from deep):

Fournier
Ibaka
Meeks
Augustin
Vuc
Smith (if retained)

.. and when he gets into the NBA rythm

Mario (GOATzonja)

We hope Gordon gets his shots to fall consistently and we just hope Elf can make some. He's coming along.

This is basically what will keep our offense humming along in the middle parts of the game since we will lose a lot of close games again this year unless Elfrid, Mario, or AG take a huge leap. Vooch can't be keyed in as much late in games as well with this approach and if Ibaka actually takes the next offensive step like he thinks he can then you can see a better than expected offense(still won't be top 10 though). That said expect all these guys numbers to come down except Fournier when in a Magic Jersey since they are leaving offensive focal points(Drummond, Dirk, KD/WB).

Aaron Gordon and Elfrid Payton will have a lot of space to go to the basket. Also, maybe we are thinking about giving a Nash role to Payton (except the shooting part). Let Elfrid control the game and set plays for everyone.

In addition to it, Vucevic will have a lot of space under the basket, because they won't double-team him.

I remember reading a great piece on Grantland (RIP) a year or so ago about how three-point shooting is more a product of the environment than the actual shooter - using the example of Vince Carter dropping off significantly in Memphis and Kyle Korver suddenly breaking out when he got surrounded by great three-point shooters in Atlanta. I'm still pissed at ESPN for pulling the plug on that site, but here's the link if anyone's interested: http://grantland.com/the-triangle/2015-nba-free-agency-3-point-shooter-danny-green-demarre-carroll/

Hopefully with Vogel we can get some similar results, and if things work out the extra spacing will help Gordon and Payton in particular look a lot better. Like you say I don't think it's a coincidence that we're targeting these guys (and Ibaka) so hopefully this is part of Rob's plan for putting everything together. Space the floor with some good shooters and hope everything becomes better than the sum of its parts.

Vuc is a good passer so he will benefit from having more 3pt threats around him.

That means Evan Fournier is basically Klay Thompson if he wasn't stuck on our crappy team. I can live with that. :D

Looks like the blazers offered parsons max and now he's meeting with Memphis.. Don't think we're in the mix anymore

Hezonja. He showed he can be efficient and fearless in crunch time, few times he was on the floor in those moments he did very well.

I like him a lot. Him, Acy, or West would be good backup PF players to add.

It's interesting to compare this strategy to some of our up-and-coming rivals like Detroit or Milwaukee.

I feel like Nik will benefit a lot from being surrounded by shooters.
