Dedmon or Mahinmi

Post#1 » by bluesteelmagic » Sat Jul 2, 2016 12:30 pm

I've seen rumors circulating around that we have interest in Ian Mahinmi. I like Mahinmi, I'm not opposed to bringing him in but we've also given Dwayne Dedmom a qualifying offer.

My thinking is that if we sign Mahinmi, we'd be rescinding the QO from Dedmon. Is it worth it? It's my belief that Dedmon could be had for less than Mahinmi and is just as capable a player as Mahinmi.

So my question is, who would this board rather have, Dedmon or Mahinmi?

If we are signing Mahinmi to be a starter then I think we should go for him. If we want a backup then we could resign Dedmon.

My personal preference is to trade a 2nd rounder for Bogut and then allow GSW to sign Dedmon away from us without the threat of us matching him (i.e. renounce his bird rights).

I'm fine with either of them, but I'd love Dedmon back. He's an energy spark and a team guy. Don't know too much about Mahinmi but I think we'll be fine with either Dedmon or Mahinmi. If I had to choose though, probably Dedmon, for loyalty reasons. Don't know if that is the better choice but loyalty speaks volumes, both for the team and its players.

Dedmon. i would only want Mahinmi and his price tag now if we are moving Vuc, which i dont think we are. So would rather have Dedmon and let Vogel tutor him

Dedmon, because probably Mahinmi will demand a big contract and I don't want to pay 10+/year for a center backup when we have Vuc and Ibaka. Also, it wouldn't be a one year deal, he will seek 4 year deal.

Dedmon is basically Mahinmi before Mahinmi became good. Vogel might be able to help Dedmon, but it could take a couple years to get him to the same level. Since we're trying to make the playoffs, which will be crucial in convincing Ibaka to stay, I'd prefer the finished product in Mahinmi as long as the contract reflects that of a bench big.

Mahinmi, then you trade Dedmon for 2nd rounders.

Why? Mahinmi is already proven and more reliable than Dedmon. And you get additional assets too.

Definitely Mahinmi. I think he is clearly the better player. He is more of a proven defender and a better scorer and has done it with fairly good teams. Also signing Mahinmi doesn't preclude us from resigning Dedmon as right now we only have Vuc at center and PF isn't that deep either. Gordon and Green can play the 4 and Ibaka can play the 5 but still more depth wouldn't be a bad thing. I think signing Mahinmi has more of an impact on Smith not returning then Dedmon but even then Smith could be resigned for depth at PF.

Chepest isn't always the best way to go and we may resign Dedmon even if we sign Mahinmi. I could still even see us resigning Smith too as we don't have much depth at the four and five spots.

I said cheapest because we should take the one, who won't affect us going after 2 max next summer.

Mahinmi if the price still gives us flexibility moving forward. We would be one tough team down low if we got him. I'm not sure we will get him because he wouldn't start, but the Evan and Vogel connection plus no state taxes and a young team are enticing at least.

Dedmon and flexibility. If Dedmon is getting 'larger' multi-year offers, then Mahinmi.

Obviously Mahinmi is better but you have to look at the big picture.

Mahinmi is the better player short term and long term, and we could still keep Dedmon to boot as our 3rd center. Pacers were a 50 win team with him on the court, a 41 win team with him on the bench. He would help us win by really helping our defense. Him or Bogut, please.

On:
Team Offensive rating of 102.5
Team Defensive rating of 99.1

Off:
Team Offensive rating of 107.1
Team Defensive rating of 107.0

IND went from a 3.4 point differential to a 0.1 point differential when they benched Mahinmi last season.

I like the Bogut idea especially because he is a defensive specialist (could teach some tricks to Vuc), he is an expiring and won't demand a lot of minutes.

There is no way we are keeping him and Vuc. The same applies for Mahinmi. If either one of those players end up on the Magic Vuc needs to pack his bags because he is out. If we tried to keep them all the there would be a glut at 5 which will eat into Gordon or Hazonja's time.

We don't need another soft Center. Ian's not exactly a tough guy. Give me Dedmon for the price and save that money. Better rebounder, more athletic, higher motor, and still hungry. You Ned a few hungry guys on the roster. One finesse Center is enough.
