I hear he will be invited to training camp. I think he makes the team as well.

Walton may have less upside than some of those players. But as of right now, he's better than Frank Jackson and Jawun Evans (just look at the head-to-head matchup vs. Oklahoma State).

What people forget/don't know about D Walt is that he was playing at a NPOY level for over half the year. Basically, he had frustrated and disappointed for much of his career, and then he randomly flipped the switch. Some short of shift in confidence or something. In his last 22 games at Michigan he averaged:

18 ppg
6 apg
5.4 rpg
1.3 spg
1.8 topg
44.1 3p% on 6.2 attempts
65.1 TS%

And the stats are even better than they look because Michigan runs a very very low-paced offense that depresses statlines.

NPOY winner Trey Burke averaged this on a little bit higher tempo with a lot more talent around him:

18.6 ppg
6.7 apg
3.2 rpg
1.6 spg
2.2 topg
38.4 3P% on 5.7 attempts
56.9 TS%

Scott is pretty on point with his breakdown of Walton. I have been watching Walton for the last 4 years and for the first 3, he was very frustrating to watch. He was timid with his shot and relied on the guys around him to make plays. Once the airplane incident happened, it seemed like the near-death experience really woke him up. Since then, he has been a new player and very refreshing to watch. I am rooting for him and excited the Magic are giving him a chance.

good to hear. Hope he gets a chance

Tough to say. I couldn't see any of the Orlando games but read the threads and those who were watching made him sound like the second coming of Mookie Blaylock. I'd then look at the stats post-game and they were pretty pedestrian.

Given the space we have on the roster, I'd guess he makes it. He is intriguing.

Shelvin Mack derailed this thought.

It depends on if Augustin is traded. Mack is probably an upgrade at 2nd-string PG over Augustin. Meaning the Magic intend to dump two of their PGs.

I am wondering the same thing. If we trade Augustin and sign Walton Jr. we could be looking at Payton, Mack, Walton Jr. Not any worse than we had last year and possibly a slight improvement.

If Augustin gets traded, Walton has an outside shot at an NBA roster spot.

If they can't find a taker for DJ, then Walton is probably looking at a two-way contract at best, nothing at all at worst.

The Magic can carry Walton on a 2-way contract. This is quite nice for Orlando, as it is not exactly carrying 4 PGs. Indeed there will be injuries and having Walton float in and out between Lakeland and Orlando can be quite OK for the team.

We know his contract is better than DJ's, so that alone is an upgrade.

Not really an upgrade when we have to keep both contracts.

Seems odd that he's not playing for another team in Vegas if he doesn't already have a camp invite lined up.

That's not 100% true just yet. And I was referring to the premise of Augustin being traded. Obviously it's a head scratcher signing if they keep both DJ and Mack.

It was rumored that he does have a pre-season invitation.

Yes, that was the word that was going around during our SL the broadcasters mentioned it several times and talked about how he was spending time with Weltman and Hammond on an off day at the facility. Add that into the fact he didn't play for another team in Vegas or Utah and it definitely seems like he'll be in camp.

Miami has one of the best developmental programs in the league. He should do well there.

Summer League players can tease but I wanted Walton on a two-way.

It sucks that Miami of all teams got him.

Maybe the Mack signing was indicative?
