NBA EXTENDS INSTANT REPLAY

The NBAhas announced today that their use of instant replay will be extended, a move that only makes sense given the speed of the game and the importance of getting calls right.

Basically, the referees will now have the ability to review plays to see if certain shots were twos or threes, including whether to award two or three free throws when fouls are committed on questionable shots. They will also be able to use instant replay to review a play during which the game clock malfunctions with no time left at the end of a quarter or overtime.

Give the league credit here, they're doing everything possible to eliminate human error when it comes to determining the outcome of a game. They're also working to protect the integrity of the game, which came under close scrutiny during the summer's referee scandal.

Thanks Mr. Stern for screwing us last year in the playoffs with the Billups shot.. But at least we know it won't happen again..

I seen it on ESPNEWS earlier, but couldnt find a link except for on http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=10321 ..

Thoughts? Will this make it better? I wonder what the stipulations have to be to review the shots..

It wouldn't be a year in the NBA if there wasn't a rule change as a result of a Magic game. Where we were the loser.

this rule wouldnt need to be implamented if the referees from game two had any sort of common sense.

id like to see something like nfl challenges but nba style. If the call is correct after video review, they get the call. If the call is miscorrect, they lose a timeout.

Well its a season too late for the Magic, but at least they made the correct change.

it would also be nice to see some consistency with refs in the playoffs. having different crews ref each game, makes the calls (or lack therof) inconsistent, so players really never know how a game will be called. Id like to see them keep the same crews, or at least the head official for each series. Dont know if it would help, but it seems logical.

Yech. Can you imagine if there was a challenge rule? Miami Heat games would go on for days!

Opposing Coach: REF! CHALLENGE! NOBODY EVEN TOUCHED WADE!

Ref: Again? ::sigh:: OK.

:after 10 minutes:

Ref: After reviewing the play, the player fell to the ground, but nobody was within 10 feet of him. No foul. Also, the Magic, who are not playing in this game, will absorb this foul and be penalized. This is the word of the Commissioner.

Crowd: Thanks be to Stern. Amen.
