ESPN's Chad Ford: Looking Ahead...

Post#1 » by eyriq » Thu Nov 13, 2008 8:17 pm

The free-agent class of 2009

We certainly won't be big players outside of resigning Turk (and maybe Bogans??). But this did catch my eye
6. Jason Kidd, Mavericks
Kidd continues to claim that the reports of his demise are exaggerated, but I'm not so sure. He's a 35-year-old point guard who really started to show his age last season. Rick Carlisle will try to turn him around, but I'm not sure he's the right coach for the job. Some team is always willing to give up some money for a point guard with eyes in the back of his head, but if Kidd continues to slip, I wonder whether he'll be able to garner more than a midlevel deal next year, should Dallas decide to move on.

Thoughts?

Kidd coming off the bench for us would be quite the step up from AJ. A big PG to makeup for Jameer and Kidd has actually gotten pretty damn good at hitting the spot up 3.

Oh...and he can pass

I believe if we were to be willing to spend a little cash and go to the tax a little bit we would be incredible. Now that I have said that I am not saying try to spend 20 million in the tax or anything I am talking around 2-5 million. Get a couple of pieces that is needed like a PF and a PG. If we brought in Kidd for the MLE and made a run for someone like Wilcox (I believe he is a Restricted Free Agent next year) then this team would have an incredible increase in depth bringing someone like Jameer off the bench and having Kidd start.

To summarize I believe if we were actually willing to spend cash then we won't be so bad off. I know it is a lot easier said then done but it would sure as heck bring in some more sales to the team.

i think Otis should take a chance at loading the team with talent for the next few years, even if it goes into Luxury Tax area. a few savvy vets like Kidd + a good PF like McDyess, could be just what this team needs to get us over the hump for the next few years.

the beauty is, unlike Boston, if those vets can't get it done before they expire, our core is still young enough to be rebuilt and make another run at a title with a different team.

I'd love to find a way to bring in Rasheed Wallace and Jason Kidd. If we could somehow find a way to use the MLE and ship out Rashard OR Hedo plus Nelson, JJ, Cook, and whoever else, this lineup would be built for the playoffs:

C - Dwight Howard
PF - Rasheed Wallace
SF - Rashard Lewis OR Hedo Turkoglu
SG - Mikael Pietrus
PG - Jason Kidd

Yeah, Rasheed is getting kinda old and can melt down at the wrong times, but he's exactly the type of power forward we need-- one who can spread the floor for Dwight, drain 3's, defend well, provide some much-needed toughness, bring tons of playoff experience and act as somewhat of a vocal leader. The downside is his age and hotheadedness.

Jason Kidd might have had a rough past off the court but he's a pretty clean cut guy once on it. He's definitely losing his touch but he can still distribute the ball better than most and run the point well, which is all he's really be asked to do here. We've been dealing with a poor defensive point-guard for a while now so the JKidd move would be sideways in that department but imagine the passes he'd throw to Dwight, Pietrus, and Rashard (or Hedo).

3. 2-6 and counting.
only 10 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists shy of yet another triple double - anonymous

if kmart and kidd combo can make it to a championship dwight and kidd can too

we need a veteran PG floor general with leadership skills, and trade Hedo for a PF who can rebound and a perimeter shot if we get those two things we're a championship team

1. if the magic win the nba finals, they are a championship team.
2. that is the only certainty, one can come up with.

1. Mavs do not have dwight
2. We have Rashard
3. We play in the east and not the west
4. Excellent distribution and at his age he is still cranking out Triple Doubles

Just wanted to point out a few positives as a response.
