The club waived him before his contract was to become guaranteed for the rest of the season.

If Otis were to make a trade there would be room for Atkins, unless he was adding a FA, but it's more likely the Magic did because:

The club waived him before his contract was to become guaranteed for the rest of the season.

This is the most likely reason plus he has been waived.

Ok we waive Jeremy Richardson, but are we not going to waive Mike Wilks? I mean at least Richardson was an eligible body for practice..

Depth Chart
PG - Jameer Nelson/Anthony Johnson/Mike Wilks
SG - Mickael Pietrus/Keith Bogans/JJ Redick/Courtney Lee
SF - Hedo Turkoglu
PF - Rashard Lewis/Brian Cook
C - Dwight Howard/Tony Battie/Marcin Gortat/Adonal Foyle

Well this hurts. The question now is whether we continue to try to make the playoffs or tank to get a high pick.

Are there rules against waiving injured players? Because you are right, if we could waive Wilks and are choosing not to, thats really stupid.

Well someone correct me if i'm wrong but I thought i heard somewhere that the Magic were gonna keep him on the roster until he had surgery.. I'm pretty sure he had surgery on the 19th of November.. I think insurance kicks in and pays his salary this year if it's guaranteed. So perhaps the Magic are doing him a favor before waiving him if someone else comes along.. Only reasoning I can think of..

otis feels bad for wilks so he's keeping him around...he likes the team the way it is with mike, it helps the team chemistry...j-rich was hurting it because he was a cancer to the team, because he claimed he was better than our sg's and deserved a shot...luckily otis is smart enough to not believe that and cut him immediately...now if he can only use those brains to get marbury for the vets minimum, and then somehow acquire david lee from NY without giving up any starters...nah, not gonna happen

The Magic can't waive Wilks, but after the 15th then can trade him.

Was he ever quoted as saying that? I never heard anything about him claiming to be better than Pietrus, Bogans, Lee and Redick.

otis is hopefully making room for a nice trade to spice some things up, not that they really need it but we would be better with anything other than cookie

Wilks is still on the roster as he is in the running for MVP.

Richardson's move could be about creating a roster opening for an un-even traded. (Two players traded to bring in three). With Bogans back, the Magic are less in need of Richardson.

Wilks has an injury-guarantee. There is no benefit to waiving him.

Stictly, this is not true. A player can always be waived, but the full salary effects still exist. That Wilks can be traded soon is a reason to keep him - to match salary.
