Dwight: 5th in 20/20 list in his 5th year

Post#1 » by Super_Mario_3 » Sun Apr 5, 2009 2:08 am

in only his 5th year in the league, dwight is now 5th in the list of 20points-20rebounds games.

(list is from 1986-1987 season onwards)

1 Charles Barkley 37
2 Hakeem Olajuwon 35
3 Shaquille O'Neal 34
4 Kevin Garnett 27
5 Dwight Howard 23
6 Kevin Willis 22
7 Tim Duncan 19
8 Patrick Ewing 18
9 David Robinson 13
10 Karl Malone 12
11 Rony Seikaly 12

This season alone, he has 9 20-20 games. if he continues this rate, he will be #1 on the list after 2 seasons. :D

Looks impressive...except Wilt Chamberlain averaged 30 points and 23 rebounds a game FOR HIS CAREER! Wilt's first ten yrs he averaged better than 20 points and 20 rebounds a game each season.
A different era,but none of his contemporaries were doing it.

Wilt was the greatest at what he did, so how does comparing what he did in a completely different time make Dwights numbers any less impressive?

Are we really going with the "looks impressive until you compare him to the greatest statistical accumulator of rebounds in NBA history, making Dwight probably only in the top 5, Far less impressive" argument...?

No doubt Wilt was head and shoulders above everyone not named Bill Russell (and later Kareem) and still a ways in front of those two, but Dwight is well above anyone else in the modern game.

No-one since the mid 80s had 5000rebs inside 5 seasons for starters...

Basketball-Reference publishes a rebound percentage, an estimated percentage of rebounds grabbed while on the floor, Dwights Rookie year was 17.3%, but since then he has been over 20% 4 straight seasons, topping out this year at 21.9% so far.

For Wilt, they only have the figures for his last 3 years, where his percentages were 18.4%, 20.1% and 19.6%, Now obviously these weren't Wilts prime years, but he did still average 18.2, 19.2 and 18.6 rebounds a game in those seasons.

If you draw a straight (and obviously flawed due to a million external factors, but this has some basis) comparison between Dwights current season and Wilts last, Dwight grabbing 21.9% of on court boards during 1972-73 could equate to about 20.8 boards per game.

That last post was solid.

Also Howard's stats will be crazy if he stays healthy the next 10 seasons like he has his 1st 5 seasons.

When Chamberlain played, there was no three-point shot. Thus, long Js and the resulting long rebounds where much, much less.

Regardless of Wilt did, Howard's feat is nonetheless impressive.

This coming from a defender of history........

Good post Glyde.

According to the cesspool known as the "general board", this feat is as impressive as counting to five.

I didn't mean to come off as dismissive to Dwight. After all,if everyone was doing 20-20s,Dwight's wouldn't stand out.
Just wanted to remind folks of one of the NBA's giants.

All Dwight needs is a pet go-to move and he will be unstoppable. Give him that,Lee's continued developement, good health and the Magic will be playing for the Title for the next 10 yrs.

the most impressive thing is the fact that all those numbers from the HOF'ers who sit above Dwight are a tally from the end of their career. Dwight's is a tally from his 5th season in the league.

Turkoglu is the 10th best rebounding SF
ESPN SF stats

Lewis is the 21st best rebounding PF

Clearly both players are starter quality rebounders. And Hedo must be considered a very good rebounder.
