OT: Italy earthquake leaves 70,000 homeless

Post#1 » by N4U|Redux » Tue Apr 7, 2009 1:18 pm

L'AQUILA, Italy (AFP) – Rescuers scrambled in the dark Tuesday to find survivors from a powerful earthquake in central Italy that killed at least 150 people as thousands of homeless sought shelter in hastily built tent cities.

With nightfall adding to the driving rain hampering the search, emergency services said 100 people had been pulled alive from the rubble of Renaissance and Baroque buildings around the historic town L'Aquila since the quake struck early Monday.

The government has estimated that up to 70,000 people have been left homeless by the quake which measured magnitude 6.2 that damaged 10,000 buildings, many beyond repair.

I know I'm a little behind as this happened yesterday but I also know we have a few posters from the Italy region around here, most notably aleZ. Hopefully the area recovers well.

It's been two days since the big quake, the region is far away from where I live but it's been a real tragedy with over 170ppl dead and the bodycount still raising.

As usual, ppl in charge didn't do their job and homes where too fragile in an area where quakes have been an issue for centuries. The whole city was essentially destroyed in a matter of hours because of that. Fortunately help is arriving steadily and a lot of ppl are donating blood, money etc

Thanks for the post N4U and best wishes to all ppl who are still searching in the rubble for relatives, friends or just what's left of their house.

Italy's government dropped the ball on this one, this happened early Monday morning and are now really doing something about it.

Been watching my Greek news and we had a couple hundred students that were in that region and one the 4/5-story dorms they were in crumbled and they're still pulling bodies out. Probably lost a few dozen kids from that. :(

The latest report says 207 have died.

Looked like a beautiful town before this tragedy.

How terrible......
Basketball is driven by three principles:

1) Movement 2) Application of fundamentals 3) Predictability

it kinda sucks when guys who are not even scientist like al gore are predicting the end of the world in 50 years and a guy who was predicting a big earthquake somewhere in italy base on actual data on how mediterranean earthquakes work gets ignored and not only that, we get things like this
http://uk.reuters.com/article/usTopNews ... SO20090407
to "prove" you cant posibly predict quakes, but they can predict the weather for the next 50 years

I also wonder if the documental on that dude will dissapear from discovery channel rotation, or wherever i watched it (cant remember)

Danilo Galinari and Bargs should make the NBA raise some funds although economically might not be the best time
