WT: Tony DiLeo Emerges as Lead GM Candidate

I think Tony has done a great job finding us talent through the draft these past years. I don't mind the idea of him shifting into the GM position, although I kind of wanted some new, young blood. What do you guys think?

I've always been a fan of DiLeo. Obviously I don't know enough of the behind-the-scenes stuff to really form an opinion though.

As far as GMing is concerned, Tony is sort of new blood. I know he's been with this organization for a long time, but there's a huge difference between scouting and running the operation. I think he brings a remarkable eye for talent to the table and that will always be helpful when making deals with other teams. As GM, I feel like he's just as good a pick as anyone. You never really know what you're going to get from guys who have never held the position before.

pretty big downgrade from Penn and Zarren imo, DiLeo is a good talent evaluator (but so is Isaiah Thomas)

This is probably unfair to Dileo but I was excited that the organization was headed in a new direction. That said I can't say I follow Dileo. My concern is I was looking for new not someone who worked for King or the bald guy! Those two seemed to know talent but handed out some awful contracts.

Why have a GM if you hiring TD. I mean they need to get a real GM in there that will challenge DC. DC has never been a great talent guy or a GM. So hiring a real GM is crucial. They are giving the keys to a franchise to a coach that has never won anything. BUt if can't get to the 2nd round with this lineup. I would fire DC

So if DC has been running the show in a summer where we exchanged Iggy, Lou, Brand, Meeks, and Vuc for Bynum, N. Young, Wright, Richardson, and Kwame, I think he's a damn fine GM.

Doug Collins was working the London Olympics....what makes you imagine he negotiated all of those final Rod Thorn moves? Are his OCD and overly emotional personality traits conducive to CEO/GM/Coaching control simultaneously? Doubtful.

I have no problem with DiLeo getting the opportunity. The guy has worn a lot of different hats for the organization and has been just as instrumental as anyone in our front office in putting us back on the map. I personally consider him the chief architect of the team. The guy is a 6er. He's earned a seat at the head of the table.

If TD was the guy they wanted as a GM. Wouldn't he have been one by now?

Isn't Tony D's forte more related with scouting in the draft?

I like Tony DiLeo and IMO he did a very good job acquiring talent in the draft. But with no first rounder in sight after trading a lot of them during the offseason, we have only two assets that can help us get better. And these are trading our current players and our cap space. Thus, I'd rather have a GM who's forte is more on expertise with CBA (re-signing our guys) or some one who is good at advanced statistics (cheap signing with our cap) with expertise in building the team right via trade.

True, but all the tenured GM's in the league started out in similar scenarios. I'm sure DiLeo with all of his experience in scouting has earned some respect around the league... while he may be inexperienced as a GM, he's certainly not considered an unknown among his peers. Keep in mind that the 6ers aren't the first team that has coveted DiLeo for the GM position. Everyone made a point to credit him for his role in acquiring Bynum, so it wouldn't surprise me if his contributions are already stretching beyond the boundaries of his current job description.

Ugh this is horrible news. I would prefer anyone over DiLeo. This guy is a horrible judge of talent. Speights, Cook, Koponen, Fesenko, Sefolosha...where are they now? We have never drafted a decent Euro player either. Enough of the old nonsense new blood is needed.

I think people sometimes fetishize new blood. DiLeo has proven himself to be a sharp basketball guy, nothing wrong with promoting quality guys from within. Whatever, it's Dougie's show anyway, everyone knows this.
