When Embiid and Noel play defense together on the floor, I'm thinking the Sixers could run a nice matchup zone. Embiid holds down the paint. Noel is positioned at the top of the key. Essentially, this is a 1 - 3 - 1 but Embiid doesn't have responsibility all the way out to the corner three. Once the ball is rotated to one side of the floor, PHI matches up man. The wing players can aggressively contest the three point line forcing contested shots or drives into Embiid and Noel. If the offense tries to skip the ball over Joel and Noel, we're going to get turnovers. If they rotate the ball back around the three point line, we're going to force turnovers by getting into this passing lanes too.

This year, I think Sims or some other "big" fronts the post up player from the other team leaving Noel to provide rim protection from the weak side. At his current weight, Noel's highest and best use is not banging with Al Jefferson.
“This may be one of the best jobs in basketball right now,” Colangelo said at a press conference introducing him as the new GM of the 76ers after Sam Hinkie resigned.

I like the matchup zone idea. Noel is going to be great defensively because he isn't limited to covering big men. His recovery speed and quickness allows him to cover out on the perimeter quite well. He's going to be great in covering pick and roll scenarios.

:D Embiid and Noel are going to be scary on defense

I love this idea as well. It wouldn't need to be our core defense, but situationally it could be devastating.

Noel really is a unique kind of defender whereas Embiid is more of a traditional rim protector. Noel is so fleet of foot that he could realistically cover a wide area starting half way out to the foul line and extending beyond it. He can also close out on jump shooters or quickly double perimeter players that pick up their dribble.

QnA with Noel, very good read.

You've said down the road you and Joel Embiid will be dominant. It's a long way away, but how much are you looking forward to getting out there and competing with him?

I think about it nearly every day. I imagine a lot about what we can be. I think we're in such a great position, a great point guard in Michael Carter, such a long point guard that can be able to create. Me and him down there, defensively, I think that's already a known thing with great potential. And I think offensively something that's slept on as well, Jo being as big as he is, he's going to take a lot of size down there. And I think especially, simply off my quickness and developing everything I'm going to need to develop in the next couple of years, with my quickness and his size and great IQ of basketball, I think we have a great chance to be real dominant on both ends of the court.

I read the story about you running into a young woman working two jobs and living in a homeless shelter, and you getting her Backstreet Boys tickets. The headline on Kentucky Sports Radio was "Nerlens being Nerlens" -- is this the kind of thing you're known for in Kentucky?

I've been doing this for a while now. I didn't expect it to go in the media or anything. I didn't even know she was homeless. I met her at the Friday's and she was a real personable young female, just started a conversation, she's telling me about the Backstreet Boys. And when I had left, I told my friend that it wouldn't be anything to get her some Backstreet Boys tickets. We did that, and then actually I found out she was homeless through Twitter. One of my buddies got her Twitter and then I saw a tweet that said she was homeless. That definitely made it a lot more worth it.

I have been impressed with his BBall Iq ever since we drafted him. I think alot of fans see him as just a great athlete and shotblocker but his BBall IQ, can and hopefully will, do wonders for his development.

I would pay money to watch Noel and Embiid working one on one after practice. Those guys are going to have a great chance to make each other better.

Me too.

Even though Joel probably doesn't step on the floor for a game this year, he will hopefully be part of practices sooner than Noel was.

The injury happened three months later than Noel's did( June vs March), but it has a shorter healing time too.

Realistically Embiid could come back soonish but I'm all for letting him relax and hang out.

That is really nice of him. The pessimist in me hopes that this isn't some ploy to lure Noel to them eventually though....

I think Rondo is far from Boston by the time Noel is a free agent. Honestly, I think our young guns truly like our franchise and want to stay here long term. There aren't many franchises with the basketball history of the 76ers. MCW, Noel, Embiid are bringing us back to glory!

No. But FWIW, he looks extremely confident and comfortable with his shot. IMO, the problem lies with his shooting arm getting slightly crossed up with his guide hand which limit the range of motion that ends up shooting it with a flick like motion.

His body twists in the air too, also looks like he shoots on the way down.

He will be a problem at PF if he put it all together. That quickness mixed with that height :P

He'll be getting to the FT line a lot. Good thing they are putting so much time into his shot.

If he didn't hang in the air for so long and he released the shot earlier it would look a lot nicer. I'm not a fan of the natural fade-away and the kick. Oh well.

Bad looking shot + Results >>>>>> Good looking shot + Bricks

Could the twist be a result of lack of arm strength?
