I think most of the time people only care about offense and the casual fan just looks at Noel's points and say he's not good. Casual Sixers fans who waited a year to see this guy play thought he would be good on offense and are just amazed how raw he is on offense now. I hear Philly radio hosts talk about how there is nothing special about Noel. They are only looking at offense and how limited he is. Noel's awkard offense makes people think he is below average but they don't look at the defensive side of his play. I'm very encouraged by his defense because he has played about how I thought he would play. Even though I say Wiggins is better at this point doesn't mean I think Noel is nothing.

I think over time, Noel will develop a semblance of a jumper out to like 10 feet. But for the time being, he'll put up 6-8 points just by picking up loose change/turning garbage into gold. I'm fine with that, he'll get even more easy buckets once the Sixers get a legit PG and Embiid steps on the floor.

Nerlens Noel will be 2014-2015 rookie of the year

Post#464 » by Ericb5 » Tue Feb 24, 2015 2:47 am

Nerlens just keeps getting better and better. Forget the stats. Just look at his energy, and confidence. He plays with purpose now.

He was a deer in the headlights for the first month or so, but he is now really balling out there.

Even if we hadn't traded MCW, I think that Nerlens would have been our best player by the end of this season.

I notice he has more bounce after the break and his shots are going in. Looks like he's in a good rhythm.

I agree, except why forget the stats? I think the stats support what you're saying. Earlier in the season, his PER was under 10. Now it's almost up to 13.

Since January 7th (20 games) Noel has a 105 ORtg to 96 Drtg, Wiggins has a 107 ORtg to 112 DRtg...

For context, 96 DRtg would be tied for the league lead if for an entire season (>100 minutes), 112 would be tied for 14th worst in the league (>100 minutes).

He's making jumpers, free throws, and drawing a ton of fouls with his driving ability. I'm loving this progression/increased confidence.

So excited to see him with Embiid, I believe they will compliment each other unbelievably and form the best defensive frontcourt in the NBA in due time

You're right, but I just meant that the real measure of his improvement is in his confidence and purpose out there. I don't really care about the stats, but they of course are improved too.

I love how he recognizes when to face up and use his speed to beat his man off the dribble. He can do that against anyone that is playing him away from the basket. The trick is, of course, being able to hit enough jumpers to force them to come out on him.

If he can shoot 60% from the foul line this year it is a real testament to his work, and Brett Brown's coaching/teaching.

He is a smart and competitive kid. I just love seeing the progression, from clueless to confident. I love his awareness as a passer too.

Wiggins
2014 (30 games)- 92 Ortg, 115 Drtg
2015 (24 games)- 108 Ortg, 113 Drtg
Last 10 games specifically - 109 ORtg, 111 Drtg
Season- 101 Ortg, 113 Drtg

Noel
2014 (27 games)- 82 Ortg, 112 Drtg
2015 (25 games)- 99 Ortg, 99 Drtg
Last 10 games specifically - 108 Ortg, 92 Drtg
Season- 91 Ortg, 100 Drtg

Just sayin'

I think Noel should develop his game like Ibaka. Anyone else agree or disagree?

Noel's jumper is never gonna be Ibaka like, he needs to mold his game after Joakim Noah, defender rebounder shot blocker. Noel does have some offensive skill I trust the staff to polish that up.

Noah is center though, Noel is PF so he needs to develop corner 3 or mid range jumper or the lane is going to be way too damn clogged.

Totally agree with your point but Noel doesn't have that skill set to ever hit corner 3s if he works hard I think he can develop an OK jumper mid range

Disagree. And this year Ibaka is shooting more 3s which I don't like. He's further and further away from the basket. If he develops his game after any good big man it should be KG. KG hardly ever took 3s. He always was 18ft out and in and played near the high post a lot. With Embiid in the fold Noel is going to have to be able to hit a consistent 15-17 footer to space the floor and make defenders play him up close. Then he could use his speed to dribble around them.
