I mean there is no excitement at all in coming in 3rd. Its like having the NFL game for 3rd place between the loser of AFC and NFC championship game.

Because they came in third at the world cup, that's a huge achievement and accomplishing it is something to celebrate. That's why it matters.

This isn't the the SB that gets contested every year by two american teams. This is the world cup, which is contested only once every four years by every nation in the world. Only 34 teams have accomplished more at the WC since the end of the world wars.

Or how about this, why do we give out bronze medals at the olympics?

Nobody cares about bronze medals at the Olympics. They're just a tie-break mechanism in the unlikely scenario that two countries are tied in golds and silvers. Besides, most Olympic events do not require a third place match specifically. Third place is awarded to the third fastest athlete, or the athlete with the third highest score (in a judged competition).

I feel that third place matches are just a slap in the face to the teams competing. Nobody cares if they're the third best team (other than little countries that overachieved).

That's fine, but that's usually not how the teams view it nor their fans.

Why even have it? Money, money, money.

That's the reason FIFA makes sure to have a 3rd place game.

I do think that the win in the game for place 3 in 2006 was big for Germany and German fans. After the loss to Italy the whole nation was depressed. The last game recovered the positive spirit the fans had before.

Maybe it can be the same for Brazil.

I will say that many nations would take great honor in winning 3rd place.

Netherlands aren’t interested in playing third place game

Now that Argentina and Germany have been determined as the finalists for the 2014 World Cup on Sunday, the world turns its eyes to Saturday when Brazil and the Netherlands play for third place.

Okay, not really.

“I think we should go home,” said Netherland’s forward Arjen Robben. “You play a tournament like this and no one wants to play it.

“I’m not even thinking about it and probably won’t”

The game will be played in Brasilia and Robben isn’t the only Dutch team member who doesn’t want to play it.

“I thought this 10 years ago and I have said it many times,” said Dutch coach Louis Van Gaal. “You don’t play for third place. It isn’t important.”

Van Gaal said that if Netherlands loses, it will make it look as if his club had a bad tournament.

“We lose an important game, a semifinal on penalties to Argentina after we played a great tournament through to the end,” he said. “Now if we play Brazil and if we lose, we lost two games in a row to finish a tournament that we played well in. It shouldn’t be like that.”

However, third place does seem important to someone in Brazil.

Brazilian coach Luis Felipe Scolari may be trying to find a way to salvage something from the tournament.

“Life goes on,” he said after his club’s 7-1 annihilation at the

Now that Robben has spoken out against the game, I hope they are crushed. Can't stand Robben, he's everything that people complain about soccer.

Robben is a loser so a playoff for 3rd & 4th is fitting for him

It's because millions upon millions of people will watch it, and thus there is money to be made from it.

I thought it was pretty obvious really

Because people pay tickets to watch it, companies pay money and people watch it.
The game itself has no purpose, there cant be a worse thing as a player to be in a game where winning gives you nothing and you are only there because you lost the semi final.

Looks like the Dutch team agrees with me.
