For all the crap I talk about Sterling, he has mastered the art of diving. He's become an expert at running boneheadedly into trouble, then diving when it doesn't work out. His ability to go to ground is second-to-none.

Everytime I see Sterling I just want to punch his face.

I'd +1 this post a million times if I could.
He's like the Robbie Savage of this era. I'm no advocate of violence unless Charlie Adam's involved, but it is surely a mug that begs for a backhand.

It's a shame Rooney doesnt get the respect he deserves. Kinda like Podolski.
The lad had a great career but when you listen to Englishmen you would think he turned out to be a Freddy Adu or something like that.
It will actually hurt his legacy that he was so good when he first arrived to the scene with that Euro tournament in 2004 then the move to Man United same summer, the debut vs Fenerbahce and the hype that followed after that.

Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash, Kevin Garnett, Toni Kroos, Pep Guardiola, Ernst Happel, Joachim Löw.

He has always been an average player on my eyes. I don't know what skill set he is good at other than being hard working.

I'm not a big Rooney-fan but no average player can top the most goals ever for England.

Klose scored the most goals for Germany but he is always an average player.

Re: UEFA Euro 2016 Qualifying Thread
And our coach Wilmots needs to get kicked out asap.
A team with Courtois, Vertonghen, Kompany, Alderweireld, Vermaelen, Naingolan, Witsel, Fellaini, Hazard, De Bruyne, Benteke, Mertens, Mirallas, Januzaj, Lukaku, Chadli,... should not play as poor as they been playing the last 2 years. Yes the results are pretty decent but besides great friendlies against France and Holland (4-3 and 4-2) I don't remember them playing a solid all-around game the last 2-3 years.

Scoring goals is a skill man. Don't you underrate that at all. It might be the most important skill, actually.

Nope but if you say Messi/Ronaldo etc are the best, what's your next category? If Rooney, Klose and Gomez are average strikers, meaning they're in the middle of the pack, there must be many many many better strikers and that is not the case IMO. They might have not all the technical skills but they can score, and are excellent at picking their positions for instance. They're just simply not average.
*edit maybe getting more and more average now I know but that's age.

Re: UEFA Euro 2016 Qualifying Thread
Let's stop with the slippery slope fallacies.
Rooney has been a consistent goalscorer in the Premier League for over a decade, including during the league's prime years as a European force. Average players don't score that many goals in a top league before they even hit 30, they just don't. For England, though, I would say that it's arguable that he's been something of a flat-track bully, given that he can't seem to perform in the big tournaments. That's true of all England players, I suppose. He has scored some absolutely massive goals for United, mind.
I do think that his role at United is a little diffuse nowadays because over his career he eventually got played more and more as a kind of #10/striker hybrid, and he lost a bit of that natural eye for goal in favour of a more balanced game. He's at his best as a support striker alongside another prolific forward, imo, as it maximises his goalscoring and playmaking abilities. He had great on-pitch chemistry with Van Nistelrooy, Ronaldo and Berbatov.
