i don´t get the point from some u - if we could have the chance to sign a legit nba center ( dampier ) or a unproven player ( jones ) why in hell would u sign jones?? dampier would give lopez some competition, could mentor him. btw he plays solid d. i don´t have a problem with frye going back to his natural pf position, since we are lacking depth at this position. and if it means that lawal or clark won´t touch the court and it makes the suns better, go on and do it.

we can go with:

nash - j-rich - ghill - hedo - lopez

and could easily switch to

nash - j-rich - hedo - frye - dampier/ lopez

or a thousand other lines we can play with

Props to the great one

This somehow lost a line in posting -

"I suppose it's mostly because Dampier will not make a huge difference one way or the other and a lot of us would rather see our new guys get the minutes - lawal, and Siler and Jones / It makes more sense that a team who looks to be contending would do it - like Boston has Oneal.Oneal and Perkins - but why would we?"

weird - anyway, the consensus seems to be we need him for rebounding primarily - I really think Jones, for one, is going to do a better job.

We had an old, fat 7-footer. let's try something else

I would love to see Damp setting some heavy screens for Dragic and Chill. Good luck to any defenders trying to keep up going around a screen that wide. And he can't be as bad a p'n'r defender as the big cactus was.

If only we could do a Hedo, Warrick and Clark for Kirilenko trade.. No way Utah would bite though, even with picks:

Nash/ Dragic/ Dowdell
Rich/ Dudley
Hill/ Childress
Kirilenko/ Frye/ Lawal
Lopez/ Dampier/ Jones

Our rotation 4's are both 3pt snipers so spacing is not compromised. Our 4's are also long and mobile enough to challenge the big 4s like Dirk/ Pau/ KG.

Never happen though so I guess it's all moot.

Giving up 3 dudes for Kirilenko doesn't make sense. And there's no way the Suns are trading two newly signed players, not before nearing the trade deadline anyway...

Also, I don't see Dowdell making the team over Janning.

Dampier doesn't make sense for a run-and-gun team who like to run a lot of screen and rolls (usually involving bigs) but in terms of matching up defensively with the Lakers, I couldn't think of a better guy for the job. Gasol was an afterthought when we had Damp and Diop, the former mostly. Just put him on Pau and he'll be shooting those hooks from 12-15 feet.

edit - I can't believe someone called Damp "soft"

I just don't know the guy's game well enough -

we need a big body, tough defender, serious rebounder - a strong presence, an intimidator

He's all of that.

Just don't make him score. Or defend stretch bigs.

He wouldn't need to score on the Suns. There's already way too many guys that can do that. I like the Suns signing him IF he accepts a small role. Just use him in certain match-ups and situations. Some teams the Suns will just have to run out of the building, other teams that know how to slow the Suns down, Damp could play those games.

Stretch bigs are a problem for most big man defenders in the NBA so it isn't really a weakness he has alone. I do like the fact that Dampier knows how to defend, rebound is a big body and provides a strong and tough presence to this team. As much as Lopez has grown, there will be times when he'll be in foul trouble and we'll need a real C to back him up. If Dampier is fine with that, then I'd sign him.

Pretty sure Gasol would be too quick for Dampier if he catches the basketball facing the basket. Now trying to post up and getting those tip in's around the rim Dampier would help eliminate those.

The more I think about it the more I LIke the thought of signing him for the playoffs.

And his value would come more I think in guarding Bynum, Duncan, Al Jefferson, those kind of bigs in the game.

Dampier wouldn't guard guys like Gasol, Garnett, Bosh, Amar'e etc.

The only problem I see in signing Damp, other than costing minutes from guys I want to see, is he always sets illegal screens. And the Suns don't get away with those nearly enough as other teams. Damp would foul out within the first five minutes of play for us.

Dampier is Lopez-injury-insurance. That, and he's a better rebounder. That, and he's Lopez-foul-trouble-insurance. That, and he's a better shot blocker.

Young? No he's not young, we all get that.

But guys, when Lopez gets into foul trouble guarding Howard, Gasol, Duncan, etc., do you want Jones trotting out onto the court or Dampier? Now imagine you're in the playoffs.

We are all treating this like there is a massive amount of risk involved. There isn't. You're paying Dampier twice what you paid Collins in order to get four times the production/impact.

Chicago met with him in Dallas when they played them. The Suns are offering the Bi-Annual. The Bulls have the capspace to offer more. I won't comment other than that but obviously if the Bulls cough up a bit more we won't be seeing him. He's waiting on offers basically to see if he can get more. So far the Bulls are the only peeps who might offer more.

The Bulls are worried about Boozer's injury and pre-season rebounding woahs. I think it is knee jerk on their part and I don't see them (my guess) offering more than the Bi-Annual or even offering anything at all. If they do; I see it as a weakness and lack of confidence on their part.

At least Chicago is motivated by injury. We are motivated by necessity.
