Amar'e's offer could shift Suns' focus to Tyrus Thomas

Amar’e Stoudemire’s free-agency stint could be short-lived. A source familiar with the negotiations confirmed that Stoudemire received a better offer on Thursday from another NBA team than anything he has or expects to receive from the Suns.

The source said Stoudemire could agree to that deal as soon as Friday, leaving the Suns in the market for a replacement power forward.

Stoudemire met with Miami Heat President Pat Riley on Wednesday night, moments after the free agency period opened, but it’s unclear whether the Heat is the team which made the offer. Stoudemire and agent Happy Walters have a planned visit with the New York Knicks on Monday in New York. He also has several other meetings in the works, including one with the Chicago Bulls.

With Stoudemire apparently out of the picture, the Suns are said to be on the verge of offering restricted free agent Tyrus Thomas a contract of undisclosed terms on Friday.

Thomas was an enigma in his nearly four seasons with the Chicago Bulls, showing flashes of athleticism and shot-blocking ability. But he was also a locker room distraction at times.

The fourth overall pick in the 2006 draft was suspended for one game last February for conduct detrimental to the team. Teammate Lindsey Hunter suggested at the time that the 23-year-old Thomas still had some growing up to do.

"Life is full of trials and tribulations," Hunter told reporters. "If you get frustrated every time you have (a problem), then you're going to live a pretty frustrated life.”

Fed up with his antics, the Bulls traded Thomas to Charlotte later that month. He has averaged eight points and 5.2 rebounds in his career.

While Thomas has shown potential, he is clearly a downgrade from Stoudemire, who had been seeking at least a five-year deal in the free-agent market. The Suns were apparently only willing to go as long as four years, amid concerns about his history of knee and eye surgeries.

Not the best option. Like I said in other posts - I really think if Sarver has not talked to the Hornets about David West - he made a mistake.

I honestly think the Knicks - if that is the team Stoudemire is going in - but I think the Knicks may have taken a Curry/TPE for Amare and LB. And flip either the TPE or Corry for David West if the Hornets were amenable.

Better then Tyrus Thomas. Though Thomas is better then Warrick.

We can't make an offer to Tyrus Thomas, we can only make an offer to Charlotte for a trade for Tyrus Thomas. And I can't see Charlotte wanting anything we'd be wiling to give up.

I don't want anything from Houston. If we do the Houston pkg, I'd rather give Stat the money. JRich expires, Nash and LB the year after that. Amare and Frye will be our top paid players going into 2012, no biggie to me.

Shane and Trevor are redundant for Hill and Clark. I'd rather Chase is a more athletic Dudley with a worse 3pt shot.

Suns need to resign Amare...I say Frick it and move on.

If we dont keep Amare this is the worst offseason in Suns history.

We lose our youngest star player, pay 6M$ per season for a 3pt specialist who can only shoot at home.

We are looking to replace Amare with a scrub like Warrick.

We are looking at 35-41 wins with an OLD TEAM void of any exciting talent with star potential. We are looking at a #12-14 pick where AGAIN we won't get star talent.

Hill/Dudley
jRich/Barbosa
Nash/Dragic

I am not even going to bother watching a SINGLE Suns game next season if they go into it with that lineup.

Hopefully Nash and Hill will force their way out when they realize what has been done.
