A new arena for 2 irrelevant teams? Glad to hear that's where my tax dollars are going.

Why? It's not like they're packing the arenas they have currently. A new venue won't boost ticket sales, a better on-court/ice product would.
Suns traded Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Jae Crowder and 4 1st round picks and a swap so some Vegas Bookies would like us.

They can hang the threat of leaving over the city the way the kings did. The city is about as apathetic toward the suns as Seattle was to the sonics so I'm not sure how that'll work.

Hopefully Sarver doesn't pull a Schultz and sell the team to an owner who will relocate

I can't open the link but heard the Suns could temporarily play in Glendale if a new Arena was being built downtown. The way the East Valley has exploded it would be nice to have a brand new place closer to Tempe possibly the Papago area.

What is wrong with America West Arena (excuse me...united airlines center...home of the bend me over an f-me in the butt baggage fees)?

-It was built in 1992 so now it may be 24 years old, but it was remodeled around 2000 I believe.

-The arena is not in disrepair and it is pretty well maintained. My girlfriend and I attended a game last year and she was amazed at how clean everything was!

The Suns aren't filling up the seats.

-I really don't see the need for a new arena. I think ours has 10 more years left in it. I also like the location. I don't want the Suns playing next to "talking stick" resort in snottsdale nor do I want them playing in east LA (west Phoenix).

TSR arena is a terrible venue; however, it should be notated that the Suns aren't looking to relocate or anything like that for 5 years. At which time the arena will be 30 years old, and is common for teams to look into new arena options.

I don't foresee the Suns and Coyotes splitting a venue, those con-clowns that run the Dogs can't even figure out who their majority owner is most days, and they are wanting to split revenues 50/50 with any co-tenant.
If the Coyotes want equal money on things such as naming rights, advertising, non hockey/basketball related events, they're not serious. The coyotes do not have the brand value that the Suns have.

On one hand I do not want the deal to go through because I think it is such a sham that in these times these cash flush teams and owners are still able to get taxpayers to fund their play-pens. But I think its inevitable if it is this proposal or any proposal, some community will be getting the shaft to foot the bill for the new stadium(s). While we have to ingest the explanations(BS) that "these stadiums bring value, jobs, and money to the area that more than pays for what the tax payers were charged to build."

Put it right next to Talking Stick Casino. Have the Spring Training Games, etc already out there. Give the current arena to the Coyotes to take over if they leave Glendale.

Aren't they building some damn Aquarium that is supposed to trump the biggest one that is held by Georgia?

Someone was telling me about that awhile back..

I agree with your first paragraph. The second one, however, I feel it's worth nothing that the taxes used to fund this stadium would be an existing tourism tax which doesn't affect us.

It's atrocious that Phoenix still has no decent public transportation options to and from the stadiums. Might be the largest city with only crappy buses and a limited light rail, it's sad.

So, the option is to build more unnecessary stadiums. One for a team that may not even be in Phoenix long term and the other who has seen attendance plummet the last few years.

Good post. Just to debate for the sake of debating:

I'm not exactly jumping up n down that they're willing to use the tax that was originally created to build the AWA for this one. The same one they looted to build the Sheraton a few years ago, that was just sold at a FIFTY MILLION dollar loss.

And to show that politicians love to be laughed at and show no comprehension of the word IRONY, where does the Mayor make his speech yesterday that included ideas for the new tax payer funded stadium? AT THE SHERATON OF COURSE! "Hey trust us to use this existing tax, we used it to build this place a few years ago, and we only lost $50 million of your money!!"

At least the lightrail project is still expanding, that will be a huge help but, yes, this city's layout will always have a problem with public trans.

Second point is so spot on, WE NEED MORE STADIUMS! In 10 years we can have two baseball stadiums, possibly FOUR arenas (GRA, TSR, possibly new Suns, AND new Coyotes.)
If the Coyotes get a new arena deal either with Tempe CC and their hockey team they're so proud of, there own, or a joint one with the Suns, they will stay. As far as the Suns attendance, ppl and sports radio heads here can say what they want, but this is definitely a Suns town more than any other pro or college sport. The fan following will come back when the team decides to come back.

Why do they need a new arena? It's not THAT old, and it's not in a decrepit state.

If Sarver wants a new arena he better be the one paying for it

These arenas or stadiums should really last at least fifty years (with occasional renovations). The notion of building a new one every two or three decades is frankly asinine.

If they did build a new arena personally I would like to see it in Glendale.

When this thread was started I thought there would be a rumor about Sarver selling the team and the new owner wanting to move the team to Seattle. Man was I disappointed :x

As someone that lives in Glendale, I agree.
