Kickboxing Thread

Post#1 » by cowboyronnie » Tue Jul 3, 2012 3:24 am

I'm not a rabid fan, especially not of the HWs, but there's been some news.

1. A consolidation of promotions between Glory (Bas Boon's promotion)/It's Showtime at the same time as K-1 might be going under.

http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2012/7/2/313 ... ale-k-1-k1

This brings the best kickboxer in the world, Giorgio Petrosyan, back into Its Showtime. Which is great.

2. Jesus Christ, Daniel Ghita is an animal. Without Badr Hari or Alistair, he might be the best HW kickboxer in the world. You absolutely need to see his fight from It's Showtime this weekend (headlined by Aerts vs Spong). Schilt seems to be signed by Glory and Ghita with IS, so the merger sets up that match. I guess. There's talk of Hari sticking to kickboxing as well.

Check out the Roosmalen fight too. WWs.
Hi love, bye love, I will miss my love.

Nice.

I enjoyed K-1 when it was around (helped that they had a few events in Korea every year, including the World GP Final 16), but since it started dying its slow death, I haven't heard much about kickboxing.

I don't have too much to say about it, but it would be nice to know when the big events are going down.

Aussie muay thai legend John Wayne Parr won his retirement fight via TKO. It was some weird muay thai/mma hybrid where they fought under full muay thai rules but in a cage and with MMA gloves. Apparently he did it because he wanted to try MMA since he first saw it but given his age didn't think he'd be able to learn the ground game well enough. Shame because he could've flown the flag for us, probably the only person to bring combat sports outside of boxing anywhere near the mainstream in Australia.

I am not the biggest kickboxing fan, but then again that could be a function of me only becoming a combat sports fan in general as k-1 was in its death throes (seemingly).

But this is good news for me. I mean it would obviously suck if it just no longer existed, lol. Hopefully these combining promotions are good for the sport, and the fighters.

Badr Hari is not quite done with kickboxing, apparently. He's in Phillie training with Nazeem Richardson for his boxing career (LOL!) but has been convinced to enter the next K1 Grand Prix (whatever the status...) nonetheless.

Seems ridiculous, and only reinforces how out-of-touch he is with the discpline of boxing (in my jerk-off opinion) that he thinks it doesn't demand 100% focus.

Bonjasky kinda sucks now, right?

I'm very excited for K-1 events on Spike. For some reason, I can't get into boxing, but kickboxing (when I'm able to watch... I watch a lot of Aerts/Kruth/Hunt/Bernardo old fights) I really enjoy. I'm not really up to speed on the post-2000s fighters, so this will help me enjoy the sport even more.

Please pick up that K-1 game I recommended earlier in the thread. Best combat sports engine I've seen.

Couple copies floating around I'm sure.

Cro Cop won the grand prix in Zagreb. Apparently uneventful and he was gifted a decision in the first round.

Saki vs Ghita, man. Glory this past weekend. You can probably find it on YouTube or that other site. Wow.

The broadcast I watched was terrible, they missed a bunch of camera shots, but oh well.

Spoiler:
Holy ****, Vovchanchyn-styled punches from Gokhan...those were nuts.

It's the weirdest thing in the world to see Ghita humbled. He's just a destroyer.

I totally spelled Vovchanchyn correctly the first time without needing to Google.
Hi love, bye love, I will miss my love.

Glory has been putting on some pretty good cards lately. I'm watching their New York event right now and it's been great so far. Petrosyan got KO'd. Next up I believe is the Tokyo event.

Nice.

Would like to get back into kickboxing, but not enough to look into when events are on, etc.

Glory doesn't have nearly the presence in Korea as K-1 did, when I could watch pretty much every event live or on replay on regular TV, and they had the World GP Final 16 here every year.

Hope Glory gets as big as K-1 once was, or bigger.

I'm excited to watch this event, check out the Chicago one they did recently (Glory 11?) if you get a chance, very fun to watch.
