The plan is to update this thread with new rankings roughly at the start of each month.

Haven't gone through them all and probably won't, but Belfort seems way too high P4P, and Cruz shouldn't be ranked anywhere until he fights. If he fights and wins, you can give him back his top 3-5 status.

I'm sure we've had this discussion before, but there's no shortage of places to find rankings on the internet. If you want to post yours, it would be nice to let us in on the thought process behind them.

What I'd really like to see is a set of rankings based on ability, not just performance. By that I just mean if you would pick fighter A to beat fighter B and most of the guys ranked above him, I don't want to see him way down the list just because he hasn't had a signature win. I'm struggling to find good examples, but maybe a guy like Yoel Romero or Gunnar Nelson. It wouldn't make sense to have every set of rankings done this way, as it's even more subjective and open to fanboyism than the current setup, but it would be a lot more interesting.

Like Aldo said these P4P rankings are silly because Cain would wreck everyone on this list. However, let me play around with this for a minute.

Lightweight

1. Anthony Pettis (UFC)
2. Benson Henderson (UFC)
3. Gilbert Melendez (UFC)
4. Eddie Alvarez (Bellator)
5. TJ Grant (UFC)
6. Khabib Nurmagomedov (UFC)
7. Donald Cerrone (UFC)
8. Rafael dos Anjos (UFC)
9. Nate Diaz (UFC)
10. Will Brooks (Bellator)

Ok, Cerrone over dos Anjos is incorrect. RDS beat Cerrone. Nate Diaz easily beat Cerrone. Cerrone is overrated, should be 9. Personally, I think Khabib is top 3 , he would man handle just about everyone else on this list IMO. Eddie is closer to 10 than #4.

Welterweight

1. Johny Hendricks (UFC)
2. Robbie Lawler (UFC)
3. Rory McDonald (UFC)
4. Hector Lombard (UFC)
5. Carlos Condit (UFC)
6. Matt Brown (UFC)
7. Tyron Woodley (UFC)

Woodley beat Condit, Condit suffered an injury in that fight. Woodley was going to win regardless of that injury IMO.

Yeah, I don't see how Vitor is number 7, especially with him losing his TRT.

This is an interesting thing to consider. I'll put some thought into it and see if I can put some kind of list like this together.

I don't predict the future. If the TRT loss causes a drop off and he starts losing, he will drop.

In Belfort's last 10 fights, he is 8-2 with wins over Franklin, Rumble, Bisping, Rockhold, Akiyama, and Hendo. And his only losses came to Jones and Silva, arguably the 2 best fighters in history. Who behind him on this list has that kind of impressive run that makes them more deserving?

One way we could do it is take your list, and then do a round robin type thing in each division, and see what kind of record each guy would come out with. Takes out some of the rock-paper-scissors effect that can make rankings tough at times. I remember doing something like that with an all-time HW list. Would be pretty time consuming, and very subjective, but it would be interesting to see the results.

I'm going to have a bunch of free time at work coming up in a few weeks, so I may give it a go at some point. Problem is when you go deep in some of the divisions I have less of an idea about how certain fighters would do. Some of them I just flat out haven't seen. I don't know if Lucas Martins would beat Gleristone Santos. I don't know that I care either.

How many of those guys were top 5 in their division at the time of the fight? Top 10 even?

I don't necessarily subscribe to the theory that you have to rank the champions at the top of the P4P rankings and then start working through the contenders, but I think Pettis could/should be ahead of Vitor. Cormier too. Even guys like Barao, and all the way down to Anderson Silva, though he's another story altogether.

Good point. Why is Anderson so low?

If Vitor had faced Weidman twice, he'd be 0-2 in his last two as well imo.

Velasquez > MM on the P4P IMO... Spider too low, Gadelha > Aguilar at women SW... Sanchez ahead of Pearson is a joke IMO, the rest is righty right.

LOL I didn't even notice Diego in there. He hasn't won a fight since 2010 and lost two in a row before that one. He LITERALLY should be 1-8 since 2009. He may be worse than Leonard.

You're right, he shouldn't even be among the top-25... Maybe Adriano Martins could take the 25th spot?

That gets tricky, because he did beat Pearson. Even if it was an absolute joke of a decision. I have to go by the decision, at least to some capacity.

Believe me, I hate Sanchez, and hope whoever he fights next drops him from this countdown.

Why?

The thread title is Cammo's rankings. It seems weird to have him above Pearson if you feel like Pearson is better / beat him.

I clearly don't weight it like a normal win, but it gets to be a slippery slope when you stop going by actual outcomes. It's like the guy who swears his 2 loss college team should be ranked #1 over undefeated teams because they have just had some bad luck.

After about 20 or so guys, LHW is a wasteland or marginal fighters. LHW has about as much depth as Flyweight does.

I see, but it's your ranking, it should not depend on the blind judges, only on your opinion...
Not complaining, I think it's the best MMA ranking I've ever seen but we can't agree with everything...

I see, but it's your ranking, it should not depend on the blind judges, only on your opinion...
Not complaining, I think it's the best MMA ranking I've ever seen but we can't agree with everything...

I try to find a middle ground, but I just think you get into a real slippery slope when you stop going by who actually won and lost and start going by who you think won. Sanchez/Pearson is an extreme example, but there are lots of closer fights where I think someone won but they ended up losing. I think it's a fine line.
