So what's next for Gus?

I think Cormier would be too much for him, but I guess it makes some sense to re-establish a #2 contender

How about DC/Evans and Gus/Teixeira? Leaves Bader without an obvious match but I'm ok with that.

Evans hasn't fought in 15 months

I don't think it's wise to throw him in there with Cormier

I think Evans vs Bader makes more sense

The thing with Bader is, is he ever going to get to the level where he is a credible challenger for Jones? Even just credible enough to make a fight and have people watch it. I'm talking Silva vs. Cote level kind of thing.

I have a hard time seeing it, so I'm in favour of sacrificing him to any top guy who needs a win. Bader vs. DC, Bader vs. Gus, whatever.

If you think there's any possibility, you would want to steer him into some favourable matchups. I don't want to swing too far on the Gus is overrated thing, but Bader vs. Gus might actually be that.

Evans vs. Bader would be okay too I guess. If Bader wins, that could score him some actual credibility, just because of the name value. And Evans can't really get any more irrelevant/further away from a title shot than he is now. If he wins, he'd be like one win away, as crazy as that sounds.

Well the problem is that besdies Rumble, you could argue that Jones has already beaten the next 5 top LHW - and after that you have what? Davis, OSP? If Jones beats Rumble, good time to move up from a fan's and the UFC's perspective, and maybe even Jones'. Of course Cain's health has not been very obliging.

Amazing performance by Rumble. I for the life of me cannot understand why this guy ever fought at 170. The only guy in the history of MMA to move up in 4 successive weight classes to fight at 170, 185, 205 and HW in a span of 18 months. Never understood why his coaches advised him to fight at WW. Rumble wrestled at 184 in college, and even King Mo said that Rumble used to cut a lot of weight even in college to make 184.

This guy should have been fighting at LHW all along. Amazing run he is on. He did to Gus what Jones could not do in 5 rounds, knocked out a top ten LHW like Lil Nog in brutal fashion, and dominated one of the best wrestlers at 205 in Phil Davis. Rumble cannot be counted out at against Jones. Will be the hardest puncher Jones has ever faced, and has a strong wrestling background to counter Jones in that area. Will be a great fight. July 4th weekend needs a PPV, and this will be it. I like Evans vs. Bader, Gus vs. Glover, and Cormier vs. Phil Davis as other fights to make at LHW.

And so it begins again. "Jones has never fought anyone with x and x quite like this new challenger." But I agree. That one perfect punch is probably the only way to beat Jones and no one is more capable of delivering it than Rumble.

Would love to see Rumble get the win but other than athletic advantages, is he really all that different to Glover? I still think Gus still has the best shot at defeating Jones.

He certainly has longer punches in his arsenal, he doesn't have to bob under Jones s length like Glover. And he's got the Glover fight as some data.

I wonder how often AJ is able to win a fight against Gus. Left a little unconvinced by last night. Convinced that ajs power is fight changing but not that he has the tech ability to beat Gus every time. He caught him immediately after being reconvened after the eye poke... Gus didn't take the time to establish range or rhythm, just threw a front kick from the pocket, Anthony countered... Gus's movement was panicked from there.

Whereas, after the fight w Davis, you know AJ wins that 10/10 times.

I agree. Gus is usually a fairly careful fighter although he does get sloppy at times when he strike. He was getting tagged when he was still fresh before he got the fight finishing blow. That teep kick was the right move to get distance but he threw it sloppily without either much strength or commitment.

Rumble did the right thing and countered it beautifully.

I know we always hype Jones's next opponent as the guy to beat him, but Rumble has been running through elite LHWs. He dominated a top 10 fighter, top 5 fighter and #1 contender. By contrast:

Cormier beat an old TRT less Hendo.

Glover beat Ryan Bader.

Gustaffson beat a washed up Shogun.

Chael Sonnen lost to Anderson Silva.

Vitor beat an Anthony Johnson trying to make MW.

Rashad beat Phil Davis.

Machida beat a 47 year old Randy Couture.

Rampage beat Matt Hamil.

So this will be Jones's first title defense against a guy who is on an incredible run at LHW, out wrestling one of the best wrestlers in the division and out striking one of the best strikers in the division.

I actually couldn't disagree more that Gus is a careful fighter. I think he leaves himself open to counters a lot.

Gus was overrated to being with.. He lost to Davis and surprised in the Jones fight. He would have been smoked in the rematch against PED Jones. Now Gus is going to get a beat down by DC. AJ looks like a super athletic and more talented version of Rampage (in his prime). The current Rampage sucks. I don't see Gus winning a belt in this division, he simply doesn't have a great skill anywhere. He's good in a lot of facets. I cannot wait to see AJ land some shots on Jones, this is going to be great matchup.

"Other than athletic advantages"?!? It's that insane, elite athleticism that makes this guy so damn dangerous!

Seriously, Rumble is one of the very few fighters when every single time he throws a punch or kick, I think to myself, "Oh crap this could be a knockout!" Glover does not have that. Practically no one has that. Off the top of my head, TRT Vitor and Jose Aldo, to a certain extent, have that type of effect.

And you could kind of tell Gus was thinking this as well. And you can't blame him. When you have these lightning quick hooks and head kicks with vicious intentions flying at you, it will alter your mindset. That almost nonchalant, relaxed demeanor that Jones often employs won't work with Rumble, and I bet Jones won't do it.

Speaking of TRT Vitor, its weird that we had nonTRT Vitor and liver failure Rumble fighting and nobody really cared. True TRT Vitor and LHW Rumble would be like the most explosive fight of all time lol.
