I'm not sure how beating a guy who should've retired 5 years ago makes someone "the real deal" but ok...

Yair was the real deal long before he beat BJ, but being the first person to drop Penn is crazy impressive.
Yair vs. Swanson needs to happen next. That would be fireworks.

You know you are really bad at your job when the beneficiary thought you benefited him way too much. Held was better than both Lauzon and Sanchez, although Sanchez earned the win by not adrenaline dumping because it wasn't his octagon debut. But virtually fresh vs. fresh, he out-fought both those guys. However, if someone is going to rob him, it's good that it's Lauzon. Great guy and fun fighter, which is why he had the crowd on his side majorly, and that is what influenced them I think. The decision actually didn't shock me given that fact.
That was my first time seeing Tanquinho, after his name has been bandied about for a while. I was pretty impressed. He needs to move his head more in the pocket, but his offensive combos and timing are very sharp. He's resilient. And he's well-rounded. His background isn't even striking. So looks like he has a good future, albeit a short one at 33. In retrospect, Garbrandt was quite the debut opponent.
Yeah, nothing is impressive about beating BJ Penn in this day and age, let alone crazy impressive. Doesn't matter if it's by tko. He gave up a long time ago. Hasn't won in 6 yrs, 2 months. Frankie tko'ed him in the last fight in which he just stood upright and took punishment. Either you keep striking in succession and finish him, quite possibly hurt him in the process, or you just pick him apart methodically. That's your choice. That had to be one of the least relevant, most pointless main events in UFC history. We don't know anything more about Yair Rodriguez than we already did.

Found this pretty interesting study of MMA judging on Lastwordonsports from a while back, where they used the media judging as comparison to rate certain people and areas in terms of valid scoring.
Marcos Rosales shows up as one of the worst regular judges, and he was one of the two who scored the fight for Lauzon last night. Also scored McGee-Saunders for Saunders, which would technically conflict with the media judging, although that one was really narrow. It was 9-8 McGee, and I thought it really could have went either way. But after last night, it looks like that would put Rosales as 7 bad decisions out of 41, for 17%. That would be 2nd worst among those who've scored a significant sample of fights, behind Howard Hughes, who everyone knew went crazy.
My sense is there's no actual review system and they just appoint their cronies. It's a cushy, easy, fun job like being a food taster. I would be also interested to see if they make a living out of it. If so, then wow, they are super lucky. They could at least pay attention when the fights are going down.

Re: UFC FN 103: Rodríguez vs. Penn
Horrible card last night with even MORE horrible results! Ben Saunders is one of my top five MMA fav's but I am not sure he should have won. Joe Lauzon KNOWS he lost, yet was given the win and nearly EVERYONE with an ounce of MMA knowledge KNOWS that Penn should NEVER have been allowed back in the ring.
At best the Judges for those two matches should be fired or suspended, at best - made to take eye exams and refresher courses on how to score an MMA fight.
Bellator laughed at the UFC, yesterday...

Yes, I didn't say Yair was a great prospect because he beat BJ. I said he was one before he ever fought BJ. And if you are referring to me being impressed that he's the first guy to drop BJ, the one thing he did show in this fight was a chin. It's hard not to be impressed when a 145 pound man dropped a guy former 205 pound killer Lyoto Machida couldn't drop.
I've been as vocal as anyone with my desire for BJ to stay retired. I hope this is the last time we see him, though I suspect it won't be.

Machida could drop BJ today, trust me. Its not the same BJ, that's the point.

Anyway, I hope we see Yair against someone good next.
