Hoopsworld: Wark to PDX 75% chance of happening

Post#1 » by DusterBuster » Fri May 7, 2010 7:17 pm

This is from the Hoopsworld Chat today:

Marcus in Portland,OR:
I saw your tweet about Warkentien to Portland being about a 75% chance. Can you get into that any further? That would obviously slam the door shut on Pritchard's career in Portland.

Travis Heath:
Talked to a player personnel guy currently employed by a NBA team and he told me that Paul Allen is still a fan of Warkentien. This personnel guy had talked to some people in Portland and was told that there is "a 75 percent chance" Warkentien lands back with the Blazers. The person I spoke with had no dog in the hunt, so it's not like he had any kind of agenda.

That said, this is a fluid situation. Things can change quickly. Obviously, Pritchard is still employed by the Blazers and Warkentien's contract with the Nuggets doesn't expire until August. Good organizations are always thinking a step or two ahead, though.

I have talked to multiple sources in Denver and know there are some people who are pushing for Wark's return. The thing about the Blazers is that Paul Allen is always willing to spend. If he comes with the right kind of coin, it's hard to see Denver matching it. The other variable worth noting is that Mark's wife still lives in the Portland area, so it would be an easy transition from a personal standpoint.

This is by no means a done deal, but it certainly appears Warkentien is still well liked by people with the necessary juice in Portland to get a deal done based on the conversations I had earlier today.

The tweet in question:

Just got off the phone with NBA personnel guy. Told me there's a 75% chance #Nuggets Mark Warkentien lands with #Blazers

If this goes down, I bet the Nuggets take Pritchard right away.

Warkentien isnt afraid to cut bait on players, and isnt afraid to make big moves. I would be all for this move. I do wonder how much Camby would like this move. Im curious as to whether he still holds a grudge against Warkentien

Ya, I heard that too, but I don't know if Pritchard would want to goto New York. After the intense media scrutiny he got here, I'm not sure why he'd want to go to a media market as blood sucking as New York. On top of that, I'm sure a part of him would love to stick it to the Blazers for unjustly firing him by going to a division rival.

I don't think he'd care that much. He is a big loyalty guy and Portland certainly wouldn't be showing much loyalty to Pritchard, but at the end of the day, he's got his guaranteed money.

I agree with you however. If I have one complaint against KP, it's being too attached to his players and letting some good trades slip away because of it. I wouldn't mind a guy who's a little more willing to take a risk once and awhile. I just hope that if they're gonna do it, they do it soon!

There's scrutiny everywhere. New York has a bigger spotlight for sure and has more challenges than Denver at the moment. I would think KP would relish at the thought of turning NY around plus all the capspace they have available.

Damn, just KEEP PRITCHARD! We're going to let him go and things will go south, while he turns the NY franchise around and we watch.

Kp deserves to get fired. Odense over Durant is inexusable. Durant is MVP caliber. You don't pass up talent like that and get away with it

Every GM would have taken Oden then.

Do you want all of them to be fired ?

Warkentein seems competent, but nothing special. Seems like Denver mostly built by giving guys with character problems another chance.

So, replacing KP with him would not be a disaster. The team is pretty well stocked now anyway.

Wark brings in players with issues and has it backfired ?? ... and i can only think of 2 players.

AI -- It was a bad marriage in Denver but Wark was able to fleece the Pistons to get Billups and that has worked out very well.

Chris "Birdman" Anderson -- He came back from his NBA suspension and is a important part of the Nuggets bench.

I love KP but Wark would be a good replacement even if he is a A-hole since it is assumed he is the one bad mouthing KP to Wojo and others. I do not like Wark but i do know he is a good GM look at some of his move besides the one's mentioned.

* He Traded up in last years draft to get Ty Lawson who could be a starter in a few years even if not for the Nuggets.

I do not feel like writing anymore out but at Hoophype they have a list of what he has done .. Here's the Link :

I'd like to have him if KP must go. I'd be REALLY mad at Allen if he didn't have someone good lined up to replace KP. Can we deal with another John Nash?

Wark to Portland and Pritch to NY seems like a great fit.

We need a GM who isn't bound by sentiment who can make the big deal to put us over the top. IMO Pritchard would love the NY spotlight and NY needs a guy who can make something out of almost nothing.

I really really hope this doesn't actually happen.

Amazing the short memory of some of the fans around here. Do any of you who are actually promoting Wark back to Portland remember the years he was here? Jailblazers ring a bell? Do I need to quote this again?

Wheeler: Talk about the other new additions to this year's roster... Derek Anderson and Ruben Patterson. What will they bring to the mix?

Warkentien: I always want players who will play hard, who love to play, and who will play as a team. When you are talking about chemistry issues these things have never been a question with these two guys. It was the exacta we were looking for this summer.

I don't know that KP to NY is such a great fit...the Knicks seemingly have traded away all their 1st round picks from here to eternity, and KP loves those 1st round picks

+1 Look at that horrific crew of miscreants he has assembled in Denver! I hide the family in the storm cellar when they roll into town.

And I just can't imagine that KP would run off to NY to be Walsh's assistant, especially with no picks.
