Greatest Blazers Ever: Vote for #9: Kersey vs. Lillard runoff

Post#1 » by Moonbeam » Sat Aug 15, 2015 1:17 pm

The list so far is here.

Project Guidelines:

Spoiler:
1. Each thread will be open for 48 hours. After 48 hours have passed, the thread will close if a single player receives a majority of the votes. If not, the top 2-3 candidates will enter a runoff period of 24 hours. During this period, you may switch your vote to one of the reduced list of candidates if you voted for someone else.

2. When making a formal vote, please include the player's name in bold. This helps me keep track. Please include a justification for your choice. It may be brief, but simply writing the name of your choice will not be a counted vote.

3. You may switch your vote, but please emphasize this in bold.

4. Please only consider each player's performance with Portland.

5. We all have our favorites, and we all have our own criteria. I believe the discussion and learning from this project will be more important than the placement of the individual players.

6. Have fun!

Runoff Guidelines:

Spoiler:
If at the end of 48 hours, no single player has more than 50% of the votes cast, the top 2* candidates will enter a runoff vote.

1. Original votes for one of these 2 players still count.

2. Those who voted for one of the candidates outside of the top 2 must cast a vote for one of the top 2 candidates for their votes to count.

3. Those who did not vote in the first 48 hours are still welcome to vote in the runoff.

4. Anyone is welcome to change his/her vote if swayed by the arguments of others.

* If there is a tie, more than 2 candidates may enter the runoff. In this case, please list your preferred order among all of the candidates, and a point system will determine the victor. The points will be allocated as follows (using a 3-player runoff as an example): 3 points for 1st place, 2 points for 2nd place, 1 point for 3rd place. If votes don't make a preference beyond #1, the remaining candidates will get the average points for the other ranks. If at the end of this process, there is a tie, the winner will be the player with the most preferences in a 1 on 1 comparison.

The last vote saw a lot of players get their first support. It's as wide open as ever.

I think I'll give heavy consideration to Kersey, Lillard, Buck, and Duck. Cliffy has a shot if I can get some good info supporting him despite his poor playoff resume. Wicks and Petrie are wild cards, as are Paxson and Vandeweghe.

Going to have go with Kersey at this point, top 10 in win shares and VORP as a blazer, also given his long tenure here makes him the winner. Long term I have a feeling Lillard will be in the top 3, but not based on his current accomplishments.

Could go a lot of dfferent ways here. I actually voted for Cliffy in the last round. But I think instead I'm going with Jerome Kersey here. He is the player with the highest win shares remaining. He made a big impact in the playoffs. His lack of an outside shot bugged me 25 years ago, but the sweet 90's haircut makes up for it.

Sidenote #1: Damian has a lot of work to do to match what Porter was able to accomplish. He's on the right track, but his next six years need to be great too.

Sidenote #2: So far we have voted in 2 players from 4 different great Blazer eras. Now we are looking at a third options from those eras. I wonder how deep we go before going off the reservation for a guy like Kiki or Paxson.

I can only think of about 4 players that would still be eligible in my mind:

Mychal Thompson, Kersey, Buck, and Petrie. Can't make up my mind

the face of the franchise, 2x all-star with Portland, 3rd team all-NBA player with Portland, rookie of the year, all-star game skills champion, and this shot:

Lillard clearly has the most achievements as a Blazer of any remaining candidates.

vote: Damian Lillard.

what remaining candidate has a better list of accomplishments?

right, but we're voting for #9 - not top 5. and at this point, his individual achievements surpass those of the remaining candidates. I mean, you can knock him for only playing three seasons, but Walton and Lucas had short tenures with Portland and were voted above players with better Blazer careers in Drexler and Aldridge, so that's a bit hypocritical.

Now that Sabas has been chosen, I'll now go for Dame as the 9th player for NO is building
the entire franchise for the next 6 years around Dame's athletic peak. I could argue he's
in the same position as B-Roy for he's going to be the face of the franchise for the
foreseeable future.

Hitting that shot with >9 seconds left and his achievements in his 3 years sets him ahead
of Petrie who never played on a playoff team. My next pick would be Buck Williams for
the Drexler led teams did not win without him but Dame's importance to the franchise
for the next 6 years makes him my choice.

I'm gonna go with Damian Lillard. Dame is a more of a franchise player than anyone left and Id also contend that by the end of his career he will be more accomplished than plenty of guys ahead of him on this list

Jim Paxson-2 time NBA allstar, an all NBA 3rd team mention, very good passer for a sg

a solid choice, but it took something like 8 1/2 seasons to accomplish what Dame already has. and while it is wrong to hold it against him, the fact that the Drexler lead finals teams happened shortly after he got traded does beg the question of just how beneficial he was to winning Blazers basketball.

I will say that once Lillard gets picked, choosing a player is going to get a lot more difficult.

I think I have to vote for Jerome Kersey here. The heart and hustle of the greatest Blazers run. 11 seasons as a Blazers. Often amongst the leaders in steals, good rebounder, blocked shots, thunderous momentum building/shifting dunks. Kersey's longevity (2nd most games in franchise history behind Clyde) leads to total numbers that rank high in many categories. At his peak he was consistently going 17/8.5 on a championship contender which aren't Sidney Wicks numbers but are still very good.

Jerome Kersey. The guy had more heart than any player I've seen. He really improved his game over the years. Drafted in whatever round it was, expected to go overseas and play for a few years, but refused and ended up making the team and eventually became the starter on a really good team. His defense was fun to watch. "I want Birdman."

Dame

Arguably already the best PG we have ever had. He willed us past the first round for the first time in 12 years. Doesn't have the nostalgia others have, but her deserves to be here.

This is a pretty close race between my two favorites at this point Dame and Kersey. The edge for me is that Lillard is arguably a franchise player already whereas Kersey was a phenomenal role-player but a role player nonetheless

I am tempted to say Ha Seung-jin with the reason being because of his fight with Sinanovic. But I can't do that. Greatest ever Blazer board thread, for sure.

I am going with Uncle Cliffy. It is tempting to go with Kersey, but Cliff had a higher peak and was essentially a first option while Jerome was never capable of that.

I'd go with Mychal Thompson ahead of Cliffy

he tops Cliff in just about every single stat as a Blazer and was a much better rebounder. And a better passer. I think he was a better defender too.

and certainly, he was a much better performer in the playoffs

in fact, I'll vote for Thompson here at #9

This is a tough vote. I think I'm going with Jerome Kersey, but I can be persuaded to change. Kersey was a guy whose impact seemed to go beyond his raw stats, although these raw stats improved in the playoffs. A guy who will get 8 rebounds but get another 6 for teammates through tap-outs and hustle plays. A guy who wasn't a great offensive force, but could kill it in transition. A guy who was a pesky, tough defender, and would do a lot of the little things to help the team win.

He's the leader of the remaining candidates in a lot of legacy stats like Win Shares and VORP, and he looked to be pretty important to those Blazer teams that were at their best.

Tally:

Jerome Kersey (5): Soulyss, Masterfully, a_sensei, DaVoiceMaster, Moonbeam

Damian Lillard (4): JasonStern, Norm2953, Oden2, James72

Jim Paxson (1): Brandon-Clyde

Cliff Robinson (1): mojomarc

Mychal Thompson (1): Wizenheimer

It's a runoff between Jerome Kersey and Damian Lillard for spot #9.

I could be convinced to go with Dame. Lillard backers, why should I change my vote?
