As far as Kobe is concerned, I respect his work ethic, and I respect his skill set. That's about all I can say though - he's pretty easily my least favorite player of all time. He played the villain role very well, though, and for a long time.
Unfortunately, he has given birth to scores of absolutely obnoxious fans who have largely hijacked the intelligent Laker fanbase, and the debates that have ensued are nauseating. There are other fans who have attracted an obnoxious fanbase, but few have attracted them in such legions. The ebb and flow that has resulted from such discourse has made him arguably the most polarizing player ever. Thankfully, there aren't too many among the obnoxious side of his fanbase here on RealGM. Venture to other forums or groups, though, and it's another story.
As a player, I think he's one of the top 15 to ever play. I think he gets massively overrated among the general public on the basis of "5 ringz". I'll never say he was carried by Shaq or Gasol, though I think it's pretty clear that Shaq (my 2nd least favorite player ever) was the best and most important player throughout their time together as teammates. Kobe was gifted a lot of opportunities that most stars don't have. It's to his credit that he has taken advantage of them, and the guy has worked his butt off for 2 decades by developing a skillset that makes him competitive in an all-time sense with guys who had athletic advantages, so I think he deserves all of our respect for that at least.
That said, I personally won't miss him one bit, and it's delicious to send him into retirement with one more loss at the hands of the Blazers.
