Arena financing complete! Demo of DT Plaza begins Friday!

Post#1 » by Wolfay » Thu Jul 31, 2014 1:31 am

It's still hard to believe after all we've gone through, but tangible, PHYSICAL progress we can see with our eyes will finally be taking place less then 48 hours from now. LONG LIVE the Sacramento Kings! 1985-FOREVER.

The Sacramento Kings got the green light from the NBA today to build their new $477 million arena, setting the stage for preliminary demolition to begin early Friday at Downtown Plaza.

The league’s advisory/finance committee, consisting of 10 team owners, approved the Kings’ loan terms and lease arrangement with the city of Sacramento, Kings president Chris Granger said. With the NBA’s approval in hand, the team expected to close on a loan with Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and have the first installment of its money wired late today or early Thursday.

Granger said work would begin at 5:30 a.m. Friday. He and Mayor Kevin Johnson will greet what’s expected to be an initial wave of 100 construction workers.

I was getting nervous once again.

Looks like the last of the last is finally done.

Nothing actually being taken down or built. I'm more of a believe it when I see it with this topic after all we had been through.

But did you see me out there??? Perfect AM weather for an Old School run!

I think once people got off their idea of "lets drive to the arena and drive home" to hey it would be nice to have something to call our own downtown this was a wrap. It's really the 1st time people have bought into a city center. It's about time.

I own a forum not related to basketball, but I hope someone takes the time now to collect pictures and video of Arco before it is too late, hardly anything out there on the first arena when they first came here.

Also a timeline of events sort of things to capture the history of the Maloof proceedings etc.

If any of you guys run a forum or blog etc related to basketball or the Kings I'd certainly appreciate the historical value of this, as well as early construction with our new arena.

Demolition is really picking up now, as they began tearing down the walls of the buildings on 5th and L today.

There's probably no turning back now.

The demolition of Downtown Plaza began in earnest early today, as the struggling shopping mall began giving way to the site of the new Sacramento Kings arena.

About a week after prep work started, a giant excavator tore out the walls of the southernmost building of Downtown Plaza, at Fifth and L streets. The building used to house, among other tenants, the Pre-Flite Lounge.
