Nancy Lieberman Expected To Become Assistant Coach

The Kings are expected to hire Nancy Lieberman, the 1996 Hall of Fame inductee and assistant general manager of the Dallas Mavericks’ D-League team, as an assistant coach.

“Definitely I’m going to offer her a job,” Kings vice president Vlade Divac said Thursday. “George (Karl) and I talked about bringing her back after she helped us at Summer League (in Las Vegas). She was terrific. She brings a different dimension. I think is a nice opportunity for her.”

Lieberman said Thursday she will accept the offer. Divac said he expects to make an announcement next week.

Looks like we'll be following in the steps of San Antonio in being one of the first organizations to hire a female coach.

Happy for her. It cements Karl further which I am personally ambivalent about, but it seems she is more than qualified

Great basketball mind and definitely has a passion for the game. Love it! I think she has a chance to really get thru to guys like Cousins and Rondo who grew up with strong female figures guiding their direction early on.

Lieberman sounds like a great hire. What a resume.

I also think a strong female voice would benefit Cousins and Rondo.

Why do you say that?

I see her as a very high profile person who could poetntially replace Karl.

Love this decision. She definitely has a good basketball mind, so let's see how this goes.

I think you're getting way ahead for yourself there. Let her at least last a season before you fit her for the big whistle.

To be fair with our organization anything can happen at any random time.

What is the percentage chance you would put on Nancy taking over for Karl as head coach this year?

You've misunderstood me. I didn't say Lieberman would succeed Karl this year. I liked her resume and saw her as a potential successor at some indefinite point in the future. It's not my expectation that the Kings will fire Karl this year. I know that firing Karl was rumored to be a option earlier this summer. But, now that they've kept him after all the bad press he received this summer, I assume they will give him at least a year or two.

In regards to whether or not the Kings should hire an assistant who could replace Karl this year (which I now understand to be the train of logic some Kings fans are following), I think that may not be a good idea. I'm not sure I like the idea of hiring back-up coach candidates. If you have to fire the coach, you fire the coach. You can't keep a spare coach on the bench, in my view. If, on the other hand, some assistant coach makes a fine replacement candidate, OK. But you don't hire someone, in my view, for that purpose. It would undermine the head coach.

Anyway, I like the hire and believe Lieberman can advance within the organization in the future.

Yeah, I'm glad you guys see it that way. I don't wanna even start putting that on Lieberman. I would also think that Vivek, Vlade and Karl have all learned from the near past and wouldn't make the same moves that caused so much scrutiny. I think if Karl has success, Iske will start to be looked at as future head coach as well. I don't wanna cast a shadow on Nancy's accomplishments or undoubted knowledge and experience, but Karl has been grooming Iske for a long time and he started at the bottom as an intern. He also has the tag of assistant head coach.
