Paul George=

Post#1 » by junot111 » Tue Jun 8, 2010 7:22 pm

I've seen him compared to Danny Granger as a best case scenario, and TMac without handles.. but what about Trevor Ariza? I think that's a more realistic comparison, and it's a damn good one too..

just think:
-Both tall and long
-Both lanky
-Both think they're SG
-Both have 3pt range
-Both lack handles
-Both are questionable shot creators
-Both are athletic
-Both can be great defenders
-Both have questionable effort??

Think George is a better overall shooter and I like the T-Mac with no handles comparison. As a Clipper fan if we get him I wouldn't be upset if he turned out to be Ariza. Hope he is Lakers Ariza though.

I was going to say that my comparison would be Trevor Ariza only on the offensive end. He is a long, smooth athlete who has some potential shooting spot up shots.

True, Ariza has proven himself as an almost-elite defender in the NBA. The problem however is that I think he can get lazy as well. He often gets whiney when he doesn't touch the ball, and on the Rockets this past year he seemed to have some lapses on defense. Still a great on-ball defender, but his team defense is up and down.

But I don't get the Joe Johnson comparison by Chris Reina....

From what I heard, George hasn't had much time to develop his skills as a defender; according to him he didn't get much of a chance to become a good man-defender at Fresno State because they played so much zone.
I'm not sure how legitimate a claim it is, but if it's true, he has room to potentially develop into a good defender.

Gerald Green couldn't shoot at all, didn't handle the ball very well and had an abysmal basketball IQ. Also he was missing part of one of his fingers or something.

I'd say he's Batum on the offensive end.

He has the tools to be Ariza on the defensive end, but none of the motivation.

i almost feel like using poor man's joe johnson or jj without handles is insulting to a prospect and/or just a bad comparison. jj's ability to play a point forward/big lead guard role is what makes him a special player. offensively, jj is sometimes a borderline chucker as it is, a guy who scores in mostly iso situations by forcing up jumpers and tough shots around the rim, not a ton of high % shots. he redeems himself with his ability to handle the ball and play make for his teammates however. but when you make the aforementioned comparison it sounds to me like a guy I wouldn't want on my team. Simply put, I don't want a guy who has joe johnson's offensive game without the handles/playmaking capabilities, a player like that just doesn't contribute to winning games.

IMO, just another case of an overzealous writer gushing over a workout wonder(though we never did get george's actual measurements...) rather than staying grounded and being realistic.

Not his vert, lane agility, etc, but we did get his measures...

6'7.75 in socks, 214 pounds, 6'11.25 wingspan, 8'11 standing reach, 5% body fat. Legit.

No, Danny Granger can post and create his own shots, George can't. He is just a thin shooter-dunker.

Granger and TMac especially are not great defenders. At least they don't show it on the court.

I don't know about post game but the idea that Paul George can't create his own shots could not be further from the truth.

His game reminds me of Joe Johnson meets Rudy Gay which is fittingly how he described his own game.
