2013 Sleepers

Post#1 » by ManualRam » Tue Jul 3, 2012 3:42 am

the 2013 mocks have been out and so far it looks like a poor draft. the talent up top is good on first glance, but delving even deeper the star potential isnt that much better than 2012, if at all.
there is some potential there, but the touted prospects up top have a ton of work to do on their games.
unlike this past draft, the depth doesnt look good either. for that reason i think there are bunch of names who arent currently listed in the more popular mocks who might enter whether they're ready or not.
here are a few players i got my eye on this upcoming season who have first round potential.

Sophomores:

khem birch-6'9 210-PF: he'll have to sit out the first semester, but if he put in the work physically, he should be able to hit the ground running once he's eligible. he's long, bouncy, active with soft touch around the rim. he'll also be playing in a system at UNLV that is better suited for his strengths, where he'll be able to get up and down the court and just be active.

dez wells-6'5 220-G/F: one of 2 musketeers who i believe have first round potential. he wasnt as heralded as some of his other fellow Word of God alumni, but he's very talented and in a position to be productive with holloway and lyons gone. he's a powerfully built wing with an attacking style. has great body strength and athleticism and will try to dunk on anybody. needs to work on his jumper, but he showed progress last yr, shooting 38% from 3 in low volume.

hunter mickelson-6'10 236-PF: a little bit of a long shot given how raw he is, but hes a toolsy late bloomer. runs the floor well, has good hands and will be one of the best shot-blockers in the SEC.

andre hollins-6'2 200-PG/G: quick, long, athletic combo who plays the point for minnesota. has deep range with a quick release. he's more of a scorer than a point, but i think his combination of size, athleticism and and 3 pt range is intriguing.

rakeem christmas-6'9 230-PF: highly touted out of HS, but didnt show much at all last season. dajuan coleman is coming to 'cuse and will be the post presence there, but on the other end of the court, christmas might have to be the anchor of the 2-3 because of his mobility, length and explosiveness. overall he has a poor feel for the game and a low skill level, but he's long and explosive.

jarnell stokes-6'8 250-PF: out of all the kids on the US U18 squad, this kid surprised me the most. he is such a house on the block. he's an immovable force, who displays great touch, patience and footwork down low. he's not the greatest athlete but is wise beyond his yrs and really knows how to use his lower body for leverage.

i'll get to possible one-and-doners a little later.

Michael Carter-Williams maybe? He's really athletic, sort of a PG in a SG's body (averaged 8 assists per 40 as a frosh), his PER in small minutes was 20+ which means a leap up if he keeps it up with minutes could mean star numbers, plus Syracuse is a high profile spot for a prospect and seems to fit his skillset. Plus he has an awesome name.

i think he's more smooth than really athletic. i also think he's more of a combo who's solid in a number of areas than a tall point. he likes to handle and try to make plays but he can be a bit wild and weak with the ball. hopefully he put in some work in the weight room during the off-season.

one more wildcard soph: laquinton ross. this kid is such an enigma. he's got a ton of ability but he looks so damn lazy on the floor. he reminds me of paul george with better shot-creating ability. if this kid GAF, he'd be a 1st rounder, but that's a big if.

freshmen:

semaj christon 6'2 180 PG-i dont think he's the best PG in this class (i think yogi ferrell's the best), but i do think that christon has the best physical tools. he's got a lot of AAU in his game, but he's got a nasty handle, vision and tremendous athleticism.

ben mclemore 6'5 190 SG/SF-redshirt freshman with a pretty outside stroke and tremendous bounce. a little rough around the edges, but maybe he learned something from sitting and watching for a yr.

kyle anderson 6'8 215 SF-you guys should be familiar with his game. i dont see his name in 2013 mocks though. i think he can go late lotto.

anthony bennett 6'8 240 PF-derrick williams 2.0. he'll be in a position to produce right off the bat.

glenn robinson III 6'7 200 SF-similar size as his pops but i think trey is more athletic with a better all-around game. smart, athletic, active, with a mid-range game. dynamite in transition. one of the most underrated players in this incoming class imo.

rodney purvis 6'4 195 G-physically mature combo guard. slasher supreme and great competitor with some playmaking ability. he'll have to show off more point skills since his size isnt good for the 2.
unfortunately for him, the pack have a couple of good playmaking pgs already.

danuel house 6'7 195 SF- similar to mclemore but slightly taller. great athlete with 3 pt range. unlike mclemore, he'll be a big fish in a small pond at U of Houston so he'll have more freedom to play through his mistakes and rack up points.

joel james 6'10 260 PF/C-deep sleeper. one of the most improved bigs in his class. has worked hard to shed some weight. bull strong, aggressive, with soft touch around the paint. can occasionally step out to mid-range. he might be depended on this first yr since the heels dont really have another C.

maybe eventually. i think he's really good and has come a long ways in a span of 2 yrs, from a 3 star mid major guy to a 5 star, top 15 recruit.
he could be held back by michigan's system early on as it is a fairly complex one and is very 3-ball centric, which he's just ok at. with his combination of intelligence and activity, i think he'll make the proper adjustments. 1 and done is a small possibility, 2 yrs is more likely.

ricky ledo's another freshman who could be a one and doner for better or for worse.
he's the most offensively complete wing in this freshmen class, but he has gunner tendencies and i have doubts about his ability to make players around him better. he's old for his class and went to a program where he can put up numbers. i expect him to make a quincy miller-like mistake.

Adonis Thomas. He only played 23 mpg but shot 50% inside the arc and 40% outside. Silky smooth SF who's very athletic and coordinated. Should get lots of PT with Barton gone.

he's got lotto talent for sure. i just dont know where to peg him. is he really a PG, or is he just a really good ball-handler who can make drive and dish plays?
in any case, he's gotta get stronger and tighten up his game on both ends. he still has a bunch of aau ball tendencies on both ends.

respect the little big man. his name is out there for 2013, but is only getting 2nd round love.
trey burke will be a POTY candidate, the best PG in college and a top 15 pick.
if a guy like dj augustin can go top 10 then burke can at least go top 15 in a weaker draft.
trey had a great season last yr and is turning heads at all the camps he's participating in this summer.
he's already dynamite in the half court and the PnR game, this yr he'll be able to run more with robinson and hardaway flanking the wings.

What do you think of Victor Oladipo now that he'll have a point guard who can create looks for him instead of relying on creating off the dribble or picks and post passes from Zeller to score off of? Jordan Hulls and Verdell Jones weren't doing him any favors last year.

it'll depend on the improvements he's made in his own game.
i like yogi and i think he's the best pure PG in his class, but hulls will still be getting a lot of time on the ball as well. in fact i expect hulls to start and get the majority of the minutes at the point. oladipo showed flashes last yr and i think he'll make the league on his build and athleticism alone, but he'll have to show more improvements offensively in both his handle and jump shot.

is mo creek gonna be back? what do you think his role will be?
one other guy that showed flashes last yr was remy abell.
factoring the other freshman wings, the hoosiers might be a little TOO deep at the 2/3 for one guy to really stand out. nice problem to have though.

I think Yogi is expected to start day 1. Creek is supposed to be a 6th man type scorer I would guess if he is healthy. It will be huge for Indiana if he is healthy. A bench of Creek, Hollowell, Perea, and a Hulls as a shooter could be the best in the nation. I would assume the starting lineup would be Ferrell/Oladipo/Sheehey/Watford/Zeller. Hulls will probably take a big minutes cut. He's too much of a liabilty on D and he can't do much besides shoot. I actually liked Abell better than Hulls and Jones last season. Good athlete who can create off the dribble. He really wasn't ready for big minutes tho.

I think Okaro White at FSU has a breakout year this year. He has all the tools to be a first round pick.

i think that's wishful thinking on your part. hulls isnt gonna go from being a starter since his freshman yr, to being the 7th-8th man/specialist off the bench his senior yr. doesnt matter if you dont like hulls or if you think he's a one dimensional player. he's a senior, has improved his floor game and the one thing he does well, he does exceptionally well. i dont think crean will reward him by just making him a token player. in the end, seniority matters. im a fan of yogi, but if he starts, i think it'll be WITH hulls in a midget backcourt.

Crean's never had a problem benching seniors in favor of more talented players. I don't think Hulls will be an exception.

seniors that are good enough to start, who've been starting for 3 yrs? nah.
my guess is that sheehey will come off the bench.
