Eh, Mitch isn't a brain surgeon, either.

I like the landing spots for both players, actually. ATL has a history of using jump shooting bigs successfully, although Payne will be somewhat buried until Milsap moves along after next year (for a bigger contract, I'd hope -- he's getting vastly underpaid). OKC needs active bigs that don't stall the offense, and McGary fits, although Adams is likely just a better player.

I'd guess both see 10-15 mpg this year (if both are healthy). Then again, back problems and mono are no joke, so that might be wishful thinking.

I think Payne is a guy that can come in right away and give you good minutes off the bench. Plus he is a really good motivated kid I think he is going to be a really good role player or starter in the league. He is kind of Thad Young ish to me.

McGary's going to end up being one of the 5 best players drafted in 2014.

He always was going to be top 3 bigs drafted in that class.

Just remember, it's summer league. There are almost zero quality bigs playing in Orlando.

That said, McGary his looked healthy, which is the #1 thing.

I think the real question for the Hawks is who'll be better, Payne or Muscala.

That's just a silly post, Klomp. As a T-Wolves fan, you of all people should be able to make the distinction between Payne (good) and Wiggins or Lavine (exceptional).

Good luck with Payne, though. Read the thread. I liked him.

Wiggins and Lavine are not in the same potential tier neither. From athletic standpoint all of them are high flyers. Payne is as good high flyer for a 6'10 as lavine for a 6'5. And in games Payne has shown more
Athletic plays than lavine per minute played.
But Wiggins is polished in several things, even if he is 20 and is a work in progress. Lavine and Payne has useful skills but they are not high IQ players as Wiggins is compared to average rookie.

You're right, dunking with your elbow above the rim doesn't show exceptional athleticism at all. Anyone can do it. Especially at the PF position.

Oh, wait...

kiddo was known as a pogo stick in HS and it (his leaping ability) for the most part at the time was considered his primary redeeming quality.

If that's all there was to athleticism, you'd be right. But it isn't, so you're not.

It shouldn't even be a contest. Does anyone seriously believe Payne is even close to being as good as McGary? Only Sam Presti haters don't acknowledge what a smart move he made to get McGary.

McGary certainly looked worlds ahead of Payne as a player, but in really limited sample size, so it was hard for people to trust him. That and his poor health and age. That's basically all of the sorts of red flags you could have without him also having a bad attitude.

But yeah, now that he's shown that he can do everything he did in the tournament in the NBA, there's little question that he'll be better than Payne. Payne just doesn't have the instincts or IQ to be a better player, but he can be a valuable rotation big with his jump shot and athleticism on defense.
