Kris Dunn or Delon Wright?

Post#1 » by greg4012 » Wed Apr 15, 2015 1:54 pm

Who do you all got and why?

Both PGs with NBA size and athleticism. Both older prospects -- Wright soon to be 23 and Dunn at 21.

Kris Dunn - 6'3 205 with a 6'8 wingspan
15.6 ppg (47% fg), 7.5 apg (4.2 turnovers per game), 5.5 rpg

Delon Wright - 6'5 190 with a 6'7 wingspan
14.5 ppg (51% fg), 5.1 apg (1.9 turnovers per game), 4.9 rpg

Kriss Dunn because of upside..
Delon Wright because of his draft stock, he willl go late 1st round and he is already a polished player and looks mature, could contribute to a contender.

Delon's defense is very impressive, and also his stats are much more impressive when you consider the fact that Utah played at one of the slowest paces in the college game (like literally something in the neighborhood of bottom 5 of all D1 teams). His pace adjusted numbers are really, really good.

Dunn for me, the kid's got a lot of upside. I like Wright's defense and steady hand but I can't see him being anything more than a backup in the NBA.

Thanks for the intel. I had no idea.

I'm struggling to rank the 2nd tier group of PGs following Mudiay and Russell. Wright is the elder (less upside?), but is very interesting to me

Look at these per 100 possession stats for Wright vs. Dunn:

Wright - 27.9 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 9.8 apg, 4.0 stl, 1.9 blk, 3.7 to
Dunn - 27.9 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 13.0 apg, 4.7 stl, 0.6 blk, 7.0 to

Compare to Russell - 34.4 ppg, 10.1 rpg, 8.9 apg, 2.8 stl, 0.6 blk, 5.2 to

I don't really like Wright as a prospect. I liked him last season -- before I started watching his games, but he literally cannot play against bigger guys. Bigger defenders bully him and I think he spends time in the D-League.

Dunn, for me, looks special. The way he moves around the rim and in the lane is ridiculous. He reminds me of a less athletic Derrick Rose. He's just one of those players, like LaVine last year, that has flashes of greatness.

Who'll be better long-term? I have no idea. Both have boom and bust potential.

The main thing concerning me about Dunn is that he is a subpar finisher -- his FG% at the rim was ~58%. Compare that to Wright, whose fg% at the rim was ~70%

I haven't updated these numbers for the tournament run, but it's not like they'll make a huge difference. Their shooting %s are for their last two seasons to get a bigger sample size, and the rest of their numbers are per40 pace adjusted to keep things even.
Delon Wright: .695fg% at rim, .41FG% on 2s not at rim, .306FG% from 3, .737FTA/2PA, 1.2ORB, 4.9DRB, 2.5S, 1.3B, 6.4A, 2.89A/TO
Kris Dunn: .582FG% at rim, .402FG% on 2s not at rim, .337FG% from 3, .539FT/2PA, 1ORB, 5.4DRB, 3.2S, .4B, 8.8A, 1.85A/TO

This is Wright by a million miles. Dunn can't shoot jumpers, can't finish around the rim, can't draw fouls (his FTA/2PA is awful, especially for a guy who can't shoot or finish), and is a turnover machine. What offensive role is there for a guard who is literally bad at everything? Outside of his steal rate and defensive rebounding he's vastly inferior to Wright. Dunn also has an injury history that Wright doesn't have, and Wright's got that sexy size advantage at 6'5".

Wright's 3P% is a bit misleading too, since he fixed his jumper. Last season he couldn't shoot jumpers at all, and this year he's 37% from 3 on solid volume.

Russell is definitely a two guard looking at those stats .

Dunn reminds me a bit of MCW
The way Dunn moves with the ball reminds me of MCW. Arched back that really negates his speed.
Both bad finisher around the rim and not good shooters.

That's pretty much how I see it. Dunn has 2 things he needs to work on - cutting down the to's and improving the 3 point shooting. If he can do those 2 things, he can become a Teague level player - it took Teague a while to get where he is. So, whoever gets Dunn will have to help develop him - while Wright should be ready to contribute much sooner.

I was bummed to see Kris pull out of this class. I really thought he coulda been the steal of this draft. Where as I feel like Delon is only going to be a role player in the next level... http://nbadraftaddict.tumblr.com/post/1 ... lon-wright
