I wish we could swap GTJ for Allen. He's more efficient, a better defender, and a better 3 point shooter. But... he's 28, looking for a four year deal, and probably at the peak of his prime right now. He's had KD, Beal and Booker drawing double teams, leaving him a lot more open then Gary this season. If we can retain Gary at a reasonable salary, we should probably do it. Allen will get a much larger deal most likely. It'll hurt the Suns, but they can't afford to let him go either.

Whatever anyone is thinking about giving to GTJ I'd rather have that tacked on to pay Malik Monk, especially if GTJ will be seeking a floor of $20M a year.

He’s on par with Tim Hardaway Jr who’s making $18 million/year. I have no problem re-signing Gary at that price.

Gary was essentially a FA thus past summer but he and his agent knew the offers were not coming, so opted in.

Would he sign for the MLE with max raises and an opt out after 3 years?

I’m not really high on him, but hes played his way into a nice contract shooting 40 percent finally from deep. Grain of salt here though in a bunch of tank games. But I feel we have to bring him back. Having two elite 40 percent 3 point snipers in the starting lineup is a must when you have Poeltl/RJ/Scottie.

Long term, he won’t work beside IQ defensively. Same is true for the potential replacement options (e.g. Monk) and yet it’s critical we get a 3 point shooter in the lineup if we’re rolling with IQ/Barrett/Scottie/Poeltl. Grades isn’t a 2 so I think you re-sign Gary if you can.

What about a declining 3 year deal that pays him next year while Barnes is still on his rookie deal? What we pay him next year honestly doesn’t matter as we won’t be a cap team for the foreseeable future with a re-signed IQ and extended Scottie. Try and get a more attractive number on the back end by overpaying on the front end and position him as an asset over the next few years.

Allen only signed a 2 year deal with the Bucks so the Suns only have his early bird rights which allows for 175% of previous salary which would be ~$15m for Allen. I think he can get more. Suns may not be able to bring him back.

So the true MLE is not know yet but likely about 12.8 and 13.5. I would offer three years $13, 14, 15 (mil) with last year a team option.
His value is full MLE since he if fairly one dimensional. This way he will make more than full MLE players and if he likes our team and city he will stay. If some team is dumb and offers Bruce Brown money then he goes and we get the $18.5 mil to find someone else. Between RJ, Grady and OA we have that spot covered and could get a 4th wing in FA.


Bruce will be gone and I would like Gary to stay but at contract above. I understand it is tough for a 25 year old NBA player to take pay cut but he has not played up to last contract. If he stays 3 years that would put him right in his prime and if he out players this contract the Raps or other team will give him bigger contract.

His current 2 years were an extension. Phoenix have full bird rights, which was part of the reason they acquired him. Confirm it on Spotrac if you want.
