Official Toronto Raptors Offseason Cap Situation (Updated)

Post#1 » by Rapsobsessed7 » Sun May 22, 2011 5:37 pm

i see in almost every thread how we should "Sign Marc Gasol, Sign Deandre Jordan to 10 million a year, sign Dalembert, Sign Chandler, but how much cap space do we actually have? I figured id make a thread explaining how much we have so we can clear up the misconception.

So with that i bring you our cap situation.

Toronto Raptors Salaries: Image

Jose Calderon
    $9,780,992 (10% Trade Kicker)
Andrea Bargnani
    $9,250,000 (5% Trade Kicker, & Performance Incentives)
Leandro Barbosa
$7,600,000 (player option, not yet exercised)
Amir Johnson
$5,500,000 (5% Trade Kicker, Performance Bonuses listed as unlikely)
Linas Kleiza
    $4,605,000
Jerryd Bayless
    $3,042,280
DeMar Derozan
    $2,625,000
Ed Davis
    $2,063,040
James Johnson
    $1,833,120
Solomon Alabi
    $830,000

= $47,129,432

* Without our #5 pick

Our pick has a cap hold that will count against this number

Our Draft Pick (#5)

$3,248,112 (Demarcus Cousins salary last year)

= $50,377,544

* Barbosa opting out

= 42,777,544

Possible Cap Space Under Old Cap (58 million)

10,870,568

Possible Cap Space Under New Cap (62 million)

14,870,568

Cap Holds:

Sonny Weems:
    $1,091,100
Joey Dorsey
    $1,091,100
Alex Ajincia
    $2,263,409
Julian Wright
    $8,574,171
Reggie Evans
    $10,160,000

what this means is if we want to make Sonny, Dorsey a RFA we extend the QO to them of that amount. Obviously Evans, Wright wont be getting that much but Dorsey and Weems i think are 2 players that we could extend a QO offer to.

Our Free Agents:

    Sonny Weems
    Joey Dorsey
    Alex Ajincia
    Julian Wright
    Reggie Evans

Conclusion:

$50,504,072 is the number were looking at assuming Barbosa picks up his PO and no trades are made. Going off this years salary cap numbers that would leave us with $7,495,928 million roughly to spend in free agency. That means though letting Dorsey, Weems go and not extending a QO to them. Thats also not factoring in the new CBA, the salary cap could be different but as of right now

$7,495,928 is how much cap space we currently have. This means Marc Gasol, Deandre Jordan, Greg Oden,Tyson Chandler or even Samuel Dalembert are all unrealistic baring a trade to free up more room. W.Chandler/Gren/Young might be options at that price but i dont know if those teams will let them go for that. If you have any questions regarding the CBA, trades, etc ill try and help the best i can.

Things To Remember:

1.
Until July 1st comes around when dealing with trades the rule is players salary X 1.25 (or 125%) + 100,000 which is the maximum you can take back in a trade. Example trading Leandro Barbosa (7,600,000) X 1.25 + 100,000 = 9,600,000 which is the maximum salary we can take back in that deal. Meaning we would add 2 million maximum to our total salary which brings down our cap space. Our we could increase it by taking the minmum amount back for example in the Barbosa case it would be $5,980,000 giving us about 1.8 more in cap space.
2.
We still have the Bosh Trade Exception which has $9,055,960 and with that you can acquire a player making that salary + 100,000 meaning the most we can take back would be $9,155,960. This expires July 10th, 2011 (one year to the date of acquired which i believe was July 10 2010).

Labor Negotiation News:

Possible No S&Ts in New CBA

The league likewise has proposed to eliminate sign-and-trades in the next labor agreement. In a provision conceived by the league to inspire loyalty, teams are presently allowed to pay their own free agents more than anyone else. But that ability to offer a contract one year longer than the competition often has resulted in marquee free agents getting traded to the team they choose in free agency after first signing a larger contract with their original team, as seen with both James and Bosh last summer.

Possible 62 million Cap

Adrian Wojnarowski reports that David Stern is targeting a $62 million salary cap in negotiations. It seems like the owners have backed off of their demand for a hard cap, which is positive news because the players would never accept that. The "flex cap" would allow certain teams to go exceed the limit or operate beneath it, so it should be interesting to see where negotiations move from this point. Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said the new flex cap

Already commented on your numbers in the Aldridge thread, but really, thanks a lot for bringing a splash of reality back onto our situation.

For the free agency talk ... the Raptors can offer a deal of somewhere along 5 years 45 mill max under those numbers ... thats under this CBA though.

Thanks for the numbers RO and nicely done :)

no problem and yeah when you actually look at it we have about 1,730,928 more than the average MLE around the NBA. Is that 1.7 million going to convince a guy to sign here vs going to a place like Miami? Thats why i think Dalembert is unrealistic. If you look at this years MLE $5,765,000 and our cap space 7,495,928 theres very little difference, i dont think people realize how little we actually have to spend compared to the championship contending teams. We have playing time to offer while the Heat, Lakers, Dallas, etc have championship potential to offer which is worth more than 1.7 million IMO.

RO, I just realized and wondering if you could update the list with the TPE's we have. Thugh they have expirations days, I expect there would be an extension if there is a lockout. TPE's can be used in a SnT I believe.

Thanks for posting this RO7. This is why I hope we can move Bargs to Sacramento for their pick. We open up full capspace for Bargs (9.25million more if it's purely Bargs for capspace, or even if they want to send a guy like Garcia back, then partial capspace of 3.45 million--- giving us somewhere between 8 to 13 million to spend on a free agent this summer---plus two high lotto rookies)

Yup, that deal would give us a lot more flexibility. Frankly, that's only deal I see that's possible for Bargnani lol, unless you guys can think some of kind of 3-way deal. I'd expect the Raptors to go after a SF in that case. Kings would also have enough room to sign a Tayshaun Prince, Caron Butler, or some veteran like that.

Although, I think we might be wise to stand pat in FA.

Great post!!!

I hope this post can stop all the people who are saying we should go after Marc Gasol, DeAndre Jordan, Greg Oden, etc.

We simply can't afford them!!!

If it's up to me, I would rebuild the Raptors from ground up. Trading away almost everyone except for DeRozan and Ed Davis for shorter contract, expiring, or draft picks.

A long while back I had taken some of my own time to research and juggle these numbers and came out with the same figure. There's honestly not much we can do this year where signing players outright is concerned but with the Bosh TPE, Barbosa & Bargnani I think something is possible albeit unlikely.

The point here is that nothing is likely to happen UNLESS we move Barbosa, Calderon and/or Bargnani and receive no salary back.

Barbosa
Its possible we could flip Barbosa to a contender (Boston, Spurs, Miami etc) or to a team needing vets (Minnesota). Getting a late pick (2011/2012) shouldn't be an issue. I assume he'll pick up his player option since that's a lot of money to walk away from.

Calderon
Here's where thing start to get tricky. He's VERY overpaid and had 2 remaining years on his contract plus a 10% trade kicker. He will definitely be our hardest piece to move. If you fall into any of the upcoming scenarios:
a) worse player coming back on a
b) longer contract(s) and,
c) get no youth/potential/capspace back
It doesn't make any sense trading him. If he must, let him stay and groom Bayless or any other PG prospect we might bring in. I doubt he starts anywhere (maybe Minny) but at least he can run your offense and your PnR. And at least he tries on defense.

Bargnani
The difficulty in trading this guy will depend on who you trade him to, what you ask for in return and the make-up of the team. He needs a rebounding, defensive C behind him to be be successful so the teams we can trade him to are limited. He can score VERY well so any teams looking to get some scoring would be the ideal place to trade him (again, providing they will give decent return).

That being said, if we want to seriously pursue a free agent, the formula is Barbosa + Jose/Bargnani. I don't know if SAC would bite on Bargs for a 2011/2012 pick but that would be nice. Also, I don't know if Boston would bite on a Kleiza for Green but that would also be very nice.

Completely disagree ... We can offer a deal somewhere a long 45/5 whereas the MLE is 35/5. 10 mill or so is the difference and thats is a huge difference in offers.

In terms of freeing up capspace, if we want significant amount for multiple free agents, then yes we need to move one of those 3 or break there contracts.

But moving someone like Bayless for a protected future first + TPE , would open that first year number from 7.5 to 10.5 mill and then all of a sudden your talking contracts of 60/5. Even moving James Johnson for capspace, moves that starting figure to 9.3 and somewhere along 55-60/5 years.

The caveat is finding someone whose willing to take on prospects for nothing but capspace etc ...

Thanks for this post. We need this entering every offseason.

And TD, we're not trading Bayless or James Johnson this offseason. BC is pretty predictable about which pieces are immovable.

I am not so sure. I think they are good pieces with Bargnani, but not spectacular playing with DeRozan.
And Davis will be better off with Barnes type of guy playing next to him instead of James Johnson (a little redundant with rebounding and shot blocking for Davis, but cannot shoot 3 nor with a quick first step on the perimeter).
