How did Calderon rack up 18 assists?

I was shocked when I saw the stat sheet. He did nothing really special in the game but somehow ended up with 18 assists. I have to admit that Calderon is one of the greatest statpadders.

He did do something special in the game and that was make nifty inside passes, throw alleyoops, and push the ball forward. He was moving well with the ball today and passing it for a good shot.

Jose plays a style of game thats very conducive for him to get assists & numbers. He doesn't really create easy baskets. Pound the rock until the shot clock is running down, force a teammate to take a desperation shot/heave and if you do it all game long, every possesion for 40 minutes, you'll eventually end up with 10 assists.

The Raptors are designed to Jose's strengths. He has 3 good PnR partners in Val, Amir, Ed and then Bargnani for PnP. He's also surrounded by players that attempt the first shot they can get (which is a team mentality).

With Jose dribbling the ball most of the time and guys shooting it right away rather then making 2-3 extra passes, he's able to rack up assists. He's similar to Rondo in that sense, except Rondo will use his ability to get into the lane to create from time to time.
