OT: NBA Comparisons to Draft Picks
Posted: Tue Jan 8, 2013 5:27 pm
I was just looking at the NBA Mock draft for 2014 (The Year of the Wiggins) and I noticed that Wiggins has drawn comparisons to Scottie Pippen while his rival Jabari Parker has drawn comparisons to Carmelo Anthony. I haven't seen either play a full game outside of game highlights so I can;t really comment on that.
But then I started looking at last year'd draft and Next year's as well.
Last year:
Anthony Davis was compared to Kevin Garnett
Seems fair, the play a similar style but Davis is not as much a bully as KG. (Not yet anyway)
Damiam Lillard was compared to Jerryd Bayless
Depends on how you look at it, he does play a similar style to Bayless but he's a far better leader and more effective in influencing the outcome of games.
Bradley Beal was once compared to Ray Allen but his comparisons have been updated to the likes of Eric Gordon
Jeremy Lamb was compared to Reggie Miller so hopefully he can turn his game around and live up to the expectation.
Terrence Ross was compared to Eddie Jones which, again, is too early to tell but if he can live up to that comparison I'd say it's a pretty good pick. Let's ease up on the T-Mac comparisons
Next year:
We have Ben McLemore being compared to Ray Allen
Nerlens Noel to Marcus camby
Shabazz Muhammad compared to Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
In the past:
Derrick Rose was compared to Dwyane Wade, which is a fair comparison but Rose takes more risks
Kyrie Irving was compared to Chris Paul, I don;t think he's as good a passer but he's way more athletic. I'd say he's more of a Allen Iverson
Demar had a "Best Case" of Vince Carter and "worst case" of Nick Young
Jonas Valanciunas was compared to Spencer Hawes/Primoz Brezic. Hmmmmmm, a little harsh maybe?
We all know Andrea was supposed to be the second coming of Dirk and Adam Morrison was the next Larry Bird.
Are all these comparisons merited? And do they give added pressure for the players to live up to?
I think a lot of times ppl forget that the comparisons are for the style of play and they are not to project the level of their success.
I couldn't find Lebron's Mock Draft so does anyone know who he was compared to?
And are there any other notable draftees that did/didn't live up to their NBA comparison in your opinion?
