Gay is not as good offensively, but he can play quality defense and we saw that numerous times tonight; Did Melo even score one bucket against Gay?
Having a more consistent jumper and a better post game is actually a huge gap in skill.
Yes, Gay is a better overall defender, but 'Melo is decent and not as much as a pylon as you think. He's a solid one-on-one defender that knows how to use his body to steer his man into Chandler and he's a rock in the post. It's the help defense that he doesn't bother trying.
