Raptors Official 2013 Offseason Transaction Idea Thread

Post#1 » by Rapsobsessed7 » Thu Feb 28, 2013 6:25 pm

Thought it might be a good idea to bring a trade idea thread back up with the recent Bargnani news. Potential destinations for Bargnani..

Since I've focused on the Raptors most of the day, here are some potential summer destinations for Andrea Bargnani:
And they WILL trade him, by the way. The 7-footer has played in just 29 of 57 games this season, averaging 13.3 points and tying his career-low at 3.7 rebounds per game. He's also shooting a career-low 29.0 percent on threes - normally his strength.

Anyway, here are those potential trade destinations:

Dallas
Houston
San Antonio
Milwaukee
Utah
Philadelphia (said to be very interested)
Atlanta
Phoenix
Portland

Th a chance the Raptors will hold on to Bargnani in the off-season, but most likely only if someone refuses to take on his current contract -- which calls for him to make $11 million next season, then $12 million in 2014-15.

What can we come up with? Here's what our cap situation looks like

2013/2014 Toronto Raptors Salary Cap
Rudy Gay
    $17,888,932
Andrea Bargnani
    $10,750,000
DeMar Derozan
    $9,500,000
Landry Fields
    $6,250,000
Amir Johnson
    $6,500,000
Kyle Lowry
    $6,210,000
Linas Kleiza
    $4,600,000
Jonas Val
    $3,526,440
Aaron Gray
    $2,690,875
Terrence Ross
    $2,678,640
John Lucas III
    $1,567,500 (Team Option)
Quincy Acy
    $788,872

= 72,951,259

Owed Draft Picks

2013 first round draft pick to Oklahoma City
Toronto's own 2013 1st round pick to Oklahoma City via Houston (Top-3 Protected and 15-30 Protected in the 2013 Draft, top-2 protected and 15-30 protected in 2014, top-2 protected and 15-30 protected in 2015, top-1 Protected and 15-30 protected in 2016, top-1 protected and 15-30 Protected in 2017 and unprotected in the 2018 Draft. [Houston-Toronto, 7/11/2012 and then Houston-Oklahoma City, 10/27/2012]

2013 second round draft pick to Memphis
Toronto's own 2013 2nd round pick to Memphis. [Detroit-Memphis-Toronto, 1/30/2012]

2014 second round draft pick to Phoenix
The least favorable of Toronto's own 2014 2nd round pick (Top-36 Protected) and Sacramento's 2014 2nd round pick (provided Sacramento's pick is #31-#55) to Phoenix. If Both picks do not fall outside of their protection, then Toronto's obligation to Phoenix is extinguished. [Phoenix-Toronto, 2/21/2013]

2016 second round draft pick to Memphis
Toronto's own 2016 2nd round pick to Memphis. [Memphis - Toronto, 7/9/2009]

No problem, lets see some creativity in trading Bargnani

I have an idea for a framework of a deal...

To TOR: Josh Smith (S&T)
To ATL: Spencer Hawes + Terrence Ross
To PHI: Andrea Bargnani

Just don't know what Philly would want to add salary wise. Maybe a brown/Gray swap?

I would want to sign a 3 point shooter off the bench at SG. Atlanta gets a C to move Horford to PF and both players fit Larry Drews jump shooting offense.

What I would do is amnesty Bargnani and not pick up JLTurd's team option.

reserve the option to re-sign Telfair for now (let's evaluate him for a while)

Also, I might have found a trade for Kleiza

Kleiza + Gray to Miami for Mike Miller
Mike Miller has fallen out of the rotation in Miami and he could be the shooter we need off the bench.

Amnestying Bargnani doesn't do anything. Won't happen. Kleiza will be the one. I broke it down earlier in another thread.

Amnestying Kleiza

puts you at...

68,351,259

decline Lucas' team option and your at...

66,851,259

Conclusion - i expect luxury tax to increase to 72-73 million. The article i provided had a massive jump but ill be more realistic. Cap at around 60 ish million and tax at 72-73 million. Meaning we would have the full MLE to use and still remain below tax next year, if we wanted to do which is why this is the most likely option.

Amnestying Bargnani:

puts you at...

62,201,259

decline Lucas' team option and your at...

60,701,259

Conclusion - cant see it happening, as youll see in the analysis below it really does nothing...you dont gain any additional cap space and youll still be able to use the MLE by keeping Bargnani and amnestying Kleiza instead. Also if you amnesty Bargnani, decline Lucas' team option remember you have to fill 2 spots with the MLE, backup PG and backup PF. We would likely be over the cap even with a projected increase so all you would have to use is the MLE. Thats why it wont happen, doesnt make sense because you can use the MLE on a backup PG and keep him.

That's a great idea. I'd definitely do that - a core of Rudy, DeMar, Lowry, and Smith would do wonders. Add some 3-point scoring off the bench, and this team would do great.

Question I have for you though: Does Philadelphia perhaps think they can get Smith for themselves and not include TOR in this deal? Do they have the assets?

I don't think they would do Turner & Hawes. Young would have to start at SF I think they take a step back. Also Turner is up for an extension soon. Atlanta would take 13 million in the deal as opposed to 9 in mine.

Id love to add a Gray/Brown swap. Gives us some added toughness. Sign Anthony Morrow or a guy like that who's a shooter

Kyle Lowry / Sebastian Telfair / PG
Demar Derozan / Anthony Morrow
Rudy Gay / Landry Fields
Josh Smith / Amir Johnson / Quincy Acy
Jonas Val / Kwame Brown

Is a tough athletic team.

1. Amnesty Kleiza
2. Pick up Lucas's option
3. DeRozan for Derrick Williams and Ridnour
4. Bargnani and Gray for Hawes, J-Rich and Moultrie
5. Ross and Fields for Dudley
6. Sign a cheap-ish backup wing to compete with J-Rich for minutes . Anderson if it comes to that, but try to find somebody decent who will take a 1 year deal that we can fit in while staying under the luxury tax line.

Valanciunas Hawes Moultrie
Johnson Williams Acy
Gay Anderson
Dudley J-Rich
Lowry Ridnour Lucas

Two open roster spots for tryout guys to make the team. Look for the next Jamario Moon on the wings! :P

Gay, Lowry, and Val (give him the ball) are our big 3 for next year. Amir and Dudley fit in perfectly as complementary elite role players. Off the bench, D-Will runs in as the 3rd big man, while Ridnour plays a lot as the backup PG and in Casey's dreaded 2 PG sets (which might not be that bad with Lowry and Ridnour together). The 8th man is either J-Rich or Anderson (or upgrade), whoever earns the backup wing spot. Then Hawes plays sparingly as a 9th man / 4th big man for when it helps to have a bit more size off the bench.

We also have good flexibility with Ridnour, Hawes, and Lucas expiring (creating over $10 million in wiggle room next offseason). Extending Lowry / retaining Gay should be no problem, looking at the long term forecast.

That group should be able to make the playoffs, with long term upside lying on the shoulders of Valanciunas, Derrick Williams, and future draft picks / flexibility. I also like Arnett Moultrie quite a bit and wouldn't be surprised if he turns into a decent NBA player.

Kleiza will be an expiring contract and will be a bit easier to move than an eleven million dollar loser. We need some shooting off the bench, and Mike Miller would be perfect, his value right now is very low and Miami would easily get out of his contract this way. We would only really need to worry about the backup PF then, I am ok with Telfair as a backup and we can re-sign him PLUS use the MLE because of his bird rights.

Go ahead and scratch Houston off that list, as one of the major goals of the Patterson - Robinson trade was to carve out just enough cap room this summer to sign one max contract star. Rockets GM Daryl Morey has the same goal for the summer after that, as well. Bargnani's contract sitting on their books spoils both plans.

San Antonio, on the other hand, won't have big cap room until forever, and loves stretch fours. They are exactly the kind of organization that would trade for Bargnani in a buy low situation, and then laugh and laugh as he experiences a career renaissance under Popovich. In fact, it's tough to imagine Andrea Bargnani NOT succeeding in San Antonio.

Rather amnesty Kleiza. Miller has an extra year than both Kleiza & Gray making 6.6 million that year. Kills us when we go to resign Lowry
