This board was in love with the idea of signing 38-year old Steve Nash to a big contract a couple years ago. Now the same people are arguing against a big contract for soon-to-be 28-year-old Kyle Lowry. Interesting...
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Not in the mood to argue with strangers online today but how can that be possible? We own his rights, we should be the only team able to talk contracts TODAY with KLow.

You can extend him last summer (the final year of his deal) but once it plays out, it plays out till the end and he becomes a FA. I think he's a UFA but I could be wrong.

Hrmm... Im not suggesting an extension tho. Im saying a new contract starting at the end of this season. It seems strange to me that we cant negotiate since he's under contract with us.

I know you are not suggesting an extension but I am telling what we CAN do based on the circumstances. We had a window to extend him and we decided to let him play contract year ball fully knowing he could blow up like he did. I don't think the plan was to keep him (when Masai was hired) but it should be in his cards now.

Toronto is the best situation for Lowry.

- Gets unlimited playing time and opportunity.
- All-star considerations.
- Wins
- Money (most likely)

Losing Lowry will set the Raptors back imo, because I'm assuming they'll have to draft a PG to replace him, and unless that dude is in the mold of a Derrick Rose or Chris Paul, it'll take a few years for that said PG to mature and develop. Heck, look at Kyrie Irving, Ricky Rubio, etc., and their struggles to lead their teams to simply an 8th seed finish.

Now, we don't have to have a stud PG to be a good team. I understand that point. But, because Lowry is playing at a star level, we'd definitely be set back a couple years at least if he's not back. Just look at our roster: we're tankworthy without him. Yes, we're only a few games above .500, but we'd be far worse without him.

We have the PG. We hopefully have the C in Valanciunas. We have at least one of the wing positions set in Ross and/or DeMar. We just need to fill one of the remaining spots, likely PF or possibly another wing, to catapult this team to contender status imo, " Indiana Pacers" territory. And really, that's why we're paying Masai the big bucks, to figure out how to lift this team to contendership from this point forward.

Historically, Lowry has had his share of disruption behavior that, for example, has caused GSW to pass on trading for him. Thus, if I was his agent, I would advise him to be on his best bahavior at all times if he wants to maximize his value in his contract year. I would remind him of this every day, if I have to, so it's ingrained in his head. Notice Gay is now saying the same thing about the wanting to be with the KIngs. Say and do the right things to make teams want you.

Toronto is really the best place for Lowry to be this season and he and his agent know it. Where else would he be able to essentailly run the team and be the leader? Toronto gives him the best chance to max his next contract value. So he's going to do and say whatever it takes to finish the season here.

I'm not saying what he's saying is untrue - only he knows the real truth, but the real test will be when the rubber hits the road this summer when the offers are on the table. Will he take a lesser offer to stay with the Raptors team he says he loves? If he gets an offer from IND, will he be tempted by a possible Championship ring? If he gets an offer from NYK or LAL, would he be tempted by greater endorsement $$ he can get from being on those teams?... etc. Right now, he's just saying what he should be saying as a pending FA, which should be taken with a grain of salt.

Keeping Kyle be a solid move. He's not playing for a contract in my opinion he always played with this kind of effort and drive. If anything DeRozan should be on the market once we can max out his value. He can definitely pull in a lot of talent, if we can sign and trade him for Monroe+picks I would be very happy to pull that deal together. You could bring Val off the bench and can try to sign a decent small forward for the MLE (Deng?)

Monroe/Val
Amir/PP?
Deng/2015 pick Raptors
Ross/2014 pick Raptors
Kyle/2015 pick Pistons

Plus a future unprotected pick with a bad Detroit team might pull everything together for Toronto.

This board makes me laugh at times with salaries.
He's worth 8 , 9 , maybe 9.5 million. He will get 40 to 44 on a 4 year deal maybe with a team option for the 5th.
or a 3 year deal for 36 million.
Shake your head Wall just signed a Max contract and Irving if he doesn't force a trade will get the Max.
Lowry isn't as flashy or stats hungry as they are but is a much better PG than either are now or may be in the future. Lets say 5 PGs are better than him CP3, Westbrooke, Parker and assuming 2 comeback 95% from serious injury Rondo and Rose.

The difference between giving him 12 million over 10 million is having 13 players under contract and not having scrubs like Stone, Buyck and Daye on the team.

Right now Toronto is absolutely the best situation for Lowry.

Why? Because of the coach.

Think about it Casey is a defensive specialist coach who struggles on the offensive end.

Lowry does not like to take orders when it comes to running the offense. This is why he has had problems in the past.

After Rudy and Bargs left there was no focal point in the offense (mandated by the GM/Coach).

So right now, Casey runs the defense, Lowry runs the offense, the Raptors win games and everyone's happy.

“@J_Pardi: Lowry's stat line last night: 31 pts, 7 Ast, 5 Reb, 5 Stl ... No other player in NBA has had a 30/5/5/5 game this season (Credit @nbastats)”

I'd prefer to keep Stew and give Monte Morris
I'd really prefer to keep Morris and Stew and give the great Killian Hayes and 2nd round picks

We CAN negotiate, we just can't sign anything. The only contract extension we could legally sign NOW is one that is based on a % of his current salary, which would make the next contract too low. We can't legally sign a market-value extension until the offseason, so what point is there to negotiate now? A lot of things can happen and then if either sides changes their stance a little, they look shady. You basically have to let the season play out and then negotiate.

The reality is I dont mind if Lowry stays but if Masai goes to Lowry and Lowry says look I wanna stay a Raptor BUT I wanna test free agency this summer, I dont see what choice we have but to trade him. If Lowry says I want 12 million $ what choice do we have? Lets see what happens.

Why do you keep advising we trade away an AS SG,that's constantly been improving, that's improved in his first year of his new contract??

You want to trade him for a C that plays no defense in order to bench another valuable asset that we have?

Do you think before you talk? Or are you going to keep repeating this every single time you post?
