How should the Raptors handle Ross & JV's next contracts?
The Raptors will be able to re-sign JV and Ross to extensions next summer or let them play out the 2015-2016 season and go into restricted free agency.
My thoughts:
I think Valanciunas will probably be our designated five year player and could very easily be a max player in restricted free agency. Ross would probably command a lot on the open market given his ability to shoot threes and defend. It would be best if we could keep both from going to restricted free agency.
My early prediction:
JV - $52 million over 5 years
Ross - $28 million over 4 years

In that scenario, you'd be looking towards 2016 when Kevin Durant becomes a free agent. You're counting on a lot to go right that summer because of DeRozan's free agency, Ross and Valanciunas entering restricted free agency, and the biggest unknown of them all - Kevin Durant's plans.
Outside of Durant, here are the other potential free agents in that class:
- Dwight Howard (ETO)
- Eric Gordon
- Lance Stephenson (team option)
- Nicolas Batum
- Joakim Noah
There are some other restricted free agents that will probably have extensions by that time (Anthony Davis, Bradley Beal, Andre Drummond, Damian Lillard). There is a steep decline in the star power after Kevin Durant. That strategy would require you to go all-in on getting him or acquiring a disgruntled star on the move.
There's a lot of risk involved in that strategy, but it certainly offers the greatest possible reward.

Way to early to be making predictions on there worth. I just hope we can them signed on a fair deal. To many players now a days feel like there worth the max.

Pay JV,
Let Ross play it out.
Let Ross play it out.

Fair. The other poster made an interesting point on how this will play into the 2016 free agency class. That could be the deciding factor. Perceived chance of signing Durant, that is.

Re: How should the Raptors handle Ross & JV's next contracts
There's greater risk waiting on JV because he could easily develop into an all-star calibre player within the next year or two given the lack of depth at the position. And if that happens, he's going to get paid big money.
With Ross I think you can wait it out.
But a lot will depend on if they think they can be a true free agent player in '16

JV needs to be extended as soon as possible. We can probably get him for Derrick Favors money. If he blows up and becomes an all-star center, he's a max guy.
Also I really would advice against waiting until 2016 FA for JV because the new TV Deal will be in effect and all contracts will be more expensive (cap potentially rising to 80M).
Ross we can wait on I believe because he's been mostly a role player and projects to be a Wes Matthews type at best.

Re: How should the Raptors handle Ross & JV's next contracts
Give JV a near max, 5 year deal. 5 years 70 million dollars per season, with no early termination clause. I would extend him even next summer, on year before his rookie contract expires.
If we are to aim to get Durant, we might just have to trade Terrence Ross. If we do resign him, I would pay him 4 years, 30-32 million. A deal that is similar to Aron Afflalo's 4 years ago.
However, I think these contracts will just be way higher, given the next tv contract will be massive.

Demanding the max seems to be the trend nowadays

Waaaay too early to be talking about this.
But if I were them, I would demand the max plus incentives plus PTO after 1 year. They say to go really high on the first offer when it comes to negotiating.

#Raptors are 7-1. In 6 of the past 10 seasons, a team that has started a season 7-1 has gone on to win an NBA championship.

If the Raptor can lock down JV to a designated player deal before the rise in the cap his deal could look cheap. Ross should get a deal similar to DD extension but MU has to move either DD or Ross eventually.

I don't care who is getting what. Ross should be nowhere near the MAX especially considering we have a better player than him playing his position making 10 mill a year. Just because another team does something doesn't mean we have to. I'd let Ross walk for anymore than 8 mill at this point, let's see where he is in 2 years.
JV on the other hand is probably going to get paid somewhere between Ibaka and Hibbert money providing he stays healthy and continues to get paid.

Re: How should the Raptors handle Ross & JV's next contracts
If we want to be able to use cap space that summer, the important thing is maximizing that cap room. So, if either will sign an extension that starts that summer for less than their cap holds ($11.6M for JV, $8.9M for Ross) we should do that. If the number is higher, we are better off going to free agency, using the extra cash to sign a free agent (like Durant, of course), and then signing them to long term deals going over the cap.
Assuming neither are given 5 year extensions, for JV the tipping point contract is 4/$51.8M; for Ross the tipping point is 4/$39.5M. I would think Ross should come in comfortably under that. JV will be close.

Durant is a unattainable dream. I would rather try to sign Leonard this off-season or batum the next. We need a string stopper at that position with good shooting to get past LeBron.
